ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.
Brattleboro
John Glick. M.D. endocrinologist, internist 9 Belmont Avenue, Brattleboro,
VT 05301 802-254-9240. This reader gushes, "John Glick is the smartest,
kindest, most thorough doctor I’ve ever had the pleasure of doing business
with. I’ve been seeing him for more than 20 years because of hypothyroidism,
pituitary tumor, hypopituitarism, etc., and he has taken such good care
of me. I’ve been to many, many incapable, rude, and downright obnoxious
doctors, and feel lucky to have found Dr. Glick. He is extremely knowledgeable
about his specialty, and is a very kind man." Burlington
Dr. Phil A. Aitken, M.D., F.A.C.S., Opthalmology, Orbital, Lacrimal,
Oculoplastic Surgeon, 55 Timber Lane So. Burlington, VT 05403 (802)
652-0717. A reader informs us, "I was referred to Dr. Aitken just over
a year ago for Grave’s ophthalmopathy. Since that time I have had orbital
decompression, strabismus and lid surgery on both eyes. In addition
I was treated with steroid and radiation therapy. I am thrilled to say
that my vision has been restored, I can face myself in the mirror again
and I am off prednisone. I doubt however that my story would have such
a happy ending were it not for Dr. Aitken. Together we looked at all
the alternatives - conventional and otherwise. He listened to my questions
and concerns, and then provided the support and information that allowed
me to make informed decisions regarding my course of treatment. With
his care, concern and most importantly the time he gave me, Dr. Aitken
provided me with the means to take control of my life and step off the
roller coaster that Graves disease can put you on." Burlington
Dr. Muriel Nathan, Endocrinologist, Fletcher Allen. 1-800-358-1144 A
reader writes: "Dr. Nathan addressed every question I had and I had
a lot and then she asked if I had any more. She was patient and kind.
She made me feel that I had some control over my medical situation-
very rare indeed. My entire experience at Fletcher Allen was as pleasant
as it could be from registration to bloodwork to my meeting with Dr.
Nathan...all surprisingly stress-free. I highly recommend Dr. Nathan."
More praise for Dr. Nathan:
"Dr. Nathan is the very best in her field! I travel From Plattsburgh,
NY, a ferry away to Vt. She has helped in so many ways. She is one in
a million...She answers all your questions, checks on you when her day
is done at the office, she keeps track on how you are doing, and knows
what steps to take next. I highly recommend anyone with thyroid problems
to travel the distance to see her. I am glad that my surgeon referred
me to her. She is more than any words can express."
A reader writes:
"I went to Dr Nathan
after looking at this website. I have Hashimotos and have been battling
it for years after the most amazing run around, so I was understandably gunshy of
the whole process and had decided to take matters in my own hands combining
Synthroid with Cytomel. Dr Nathan not only helped me actually understand
what I was going through but also helped me understand how I was medicating myself. Even though she
was skeptical of the Cytomel, she worked with
me, letting me keep it while testing me to see that I was taking the right combination. It felt so
good not to be discounted and I feel utterly safe with her. She listens and respects the feeling and
conditions of the patient." (Added: June
2004) Windsor
"I see that someone in Windsor, Vermont was looking for a top doc. I
can heartily recommend Muriel Nathan at Fletcher Allen Health Care in
Burlington Vermont. She takes her time, listens, and offers explanations
that make sense. I am what some physicians might call "difficult" because
I haven't always been willing to blindly follow medical advice without
doing some of my own research and trying some alternatives, and she
has been very accepting and supportive."
Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
