ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.
Amarillo
Dr. Ken M. Brantley, MD PHD PA, Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1215
Coulter Suite M, Amarillo Tx 79106, (806) 354-0895. "Dr. Brantley listens to what you say and when
he asks how you are, he REALLY means it. He prescribes Synthroid first to see if a patient is one of the
90% that do well on it, but if they don't he WILL prescribe Armour and will work with you until you
feel well."
Another reader adds:
"Finally, a doctor who does not just rely on thyroid tests but listens to you and learns that in your family
the tests are not accurate. After years of searching for a doctor that will not make you feel mentally ill,
someone sees your goiter and says, 'Yes, you have a thyroid problem' and helps you." (Added 11/02)
A reader writes:
"Dr. Brantley is genuinely concerned with helping
you feel better. He's the first specialist that has actually helped me with my hypothyroid problem. God
Bless Him!!! You won't go wrong with this doc!! " (Added: Dec. 04) Amarillo
Dr. Ben Chavez, MD, Internal Medicine, 3501 S. Soncy Rd., Ste. 134,
Amarillo, TX 79119, 806-331-2400. A reader writes:
"Dr. Chavez is one of the most caring physician's I've ever met (& I've been in the
medical industry for 30 years!). I was having severe symptoms of grave's disease & he listened, took the
time to make me feel like I mattered. He immediately tested me for grave's disease & started treatment
with PTU. When I didn't want to undergo ablation, he understood. I weighed the pros & cons of the
available treatments & decided to continue PTU along with Toprol XL for tachycardia. My thyroid levels
have been normal for over 2 years now with no symptoms whatsoever. My blood counts & thyroid levels
have all been normal to this day. I have since moved to OK & every doctor I talk to here won't even
consider "allowing" me to continue with my current regimen. All they will consider is ablation. I will
continue to drive 6 hours to see Dr. Chavez because he considers every patient as a complete person &
doesn't feel that his way is the only way. He considers what options are best
for that patient." (Added Apr 06) Arlington
J. P. Schwartz, D.O., Family, 5610 Norton Court, Arlington, TX 76016,
817-496-6544. "He was able to help me feel better than any other doctor in the last 10 years by treating
me instead of going by what's supposed to be "normal"." (added 1/04)
Another fan:
"He listens to how you feel and looks at everything that may be triggering your problem. He treats you
as an individual." (Added 10/05)
A reader writes:
"I agree with the other entries about Dr. Schwartz. He does listen, and gives you a full
explanation and then treats you in a way that you are both comfortable with and that you fully
understand. He is with out a doubt a TOP DOC and my only regret is not finding him years sooner when
my Cancer first appeared and I had to endure an entire array of by the book Physicians." (Added Apr
06) Arlington
Dr. Charles Hamel, ENT, 4412 Matlock Ste 300, TX 76018, 817-468-7755.
A reader writes:
"Dr. Hamel really listens to his patients and encourages you to be an active participant in your treatment.
He treats the whole patient, not just the lab work numbers. His office staff is wonderful. I have never
had a problem with getting return calls. Marie is the best! This office practices a good balance of
traditional and complementary medicine. This doctor works with you to get to the bottom of whatever
is wrong, which is refreshing. I never feel rushed in my visits and both he and his nurse take the time
to explain concepts thoroughly. Some treatment options may not be covered by traditional insurance, but
it is well worth the investment to your health. Dr. Hamel works with all types of thyroid medications (he
is not biased to just offering Synthroid)." (Added 6/05)
A reader writes:
"Totally changed my life, mostly by fixing what 10 other
doctors said was "not" low thyroid. Always has an answer or suggestion
for me. Personable and very, very awesome!" (Added June 2005)
Another recommendation:
"Dr. Hamel is exceptional. His staff is also fantastic!" (Added 10/05) Austin
Thomas Blevins, 900 West 38th Street, Suite 420, Austin, TX,
512-458-8400, "Cares for his patients. Takes his time. Good personality." (Added 4/04)
Another reader writes:
"I've seen Dr Blevins for years. He's helped me through gestational diabetes as well as my thyroid
problems. He is definitely the best doctor in Austin on these issues. He is very hard to get in to see, but
well wortH it. He is an expert in endocrinology, and really understands how to get people well in a
caring, understanding way. I would recommend him to anyone." (Added 6/05) Austin

TX 78759, 512-343-6223/512-343-0727, www.imeddoctor.com. A reader describes Dr. Manzanero
as "the most brilliant doctor I know in the Austin area. He is very knowledgeable about thyroid disease
and how to treat it. He is very caring and very patient and meets all the requirements to be listed as a
Top Doc."
Another reader likes Dr. Manzanero:
"I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 1987 while pregnant with my second child. I took Synthroid
exactly as my endocrinologist recommended until 1998. In those 11 years I had gained over 50 pounds
(yes, I exercised regularly), had Epstein Barr Virus (awful fatigue and more), had major depression for
about the last three years before changing to Armour (yes, I tried all the anti-this’s and the anti-that’s
for the depression) I had no feelings one way or the other. Yuck. He changed my thyroid med to Armour
and recommended the use of a progesterone cream. He had me check my morning auxiliary (armpit)
temperature (no other doctor told me there were other hypothyroid symptoms to watch for. He did all
the blood tests plus listened to all that I had to say about how "I" felt. I have been in the healthcare field
for as many years as I’ve been hypothyroid. And it is refreshing to be treated as a patient not a lab
value! I must add he is extremely busy but very good!"
Still more praise:
This doctor, writes a reader, is "Awesome!" He, "Listens, really listens, cares about patient, not just lab
values, is knowledgeable of latest research, and gives incredible emotional support."
Still more praise:
"I've only spent an hour with him and am on my second week of Armour, so I have no results yet, but
I do feel that he answered my questions and addressed concerns far better than the OB/GYN who initially
diagnosed me and said ‘just take Synthroid and you'll be fine in 6 weeks.’"
Another reader:
"Knows his stuff and REALLY listens" (Added 6/02)

R. Anders Rosendahl, M.D. Thyroid Surgery 1927 Lohmans Crossing Road

Rosendahl does nothing but thyroid surgery and has done thousands and thousands of thyroid operations.
He is patient and takes all the time necessary to fully educate his patients about their thyroid problems."
(Added 6/03)
Another reader recommends Dr. Rosendahl:
"I was very fortunate to find Dr. Rosendahl and travel to Austin to have my surgery done. He was so
nice, and answered all our questions and then some. Also, we knew he was very competent and skillful.
His secretary also was so nice in helping us with where to stay etc. What could have been a very stressful
time was actually made pleasant by their kindness! Too bad there aren't more doctors like Dr.
Rosendahl." (added 1/04)
More praise from a reader for Dr. Rosendahl:
"He is very informative, caring, experienced, and has a great sense of humor along with it!" (added 1/04)
Yet another reader writes:
"Dr. Rosendahl takes the time to explain your diagnosis, treatment, & options. He makes a point to treat
you like an individual, not a lab test. He's intelligent, but still caring. I'd recommend him to anyone."

lifestyle plans for her patients too." (Added Apr 06) Beaumont
From a pair of readers in Texas... "Good to hear from you! We are doing
fine with our thyroid problems. Just wanted to send you the name of
our endocrinologist in Beaumont, Texas, Dr. R.C. Hood. He is a great
doctor and comes highly recommended from other doctors in our area.
His nurse Sue is also very nice and helpful!" Bryan
Dr. Nolan Shipman, Ears,Nose & Throat, 3201 University Dr E, suite 425,
TX 77802, 979-731-8284, www.shipmanent.com. A reader writes: Doctor Shipman looks at physical
symptoms to determine thyroid problems, does prescribe Armour and uses blood tests only to confirm
that the levels agree with what he is observing. He alerted me to my low thyroid and had to do some
convincing to get me to try it. But he was right and I feel much better and will go with this Doctor as
long as I can." (Added 6/05) Burleson

fax 817-293-6729 A reader writes: "I have been battling the most common
symptoms of hypothyroidism for about 1 1/2 years. After seeing a "recommended"
doctor (Dr. Mair) who basically told me I was getting old and fat, and
a surgeon who told me I was depressed, I finally stumbled across the
very blessed Dr. Horseley. She actually looked me in the eye and LISTENED
to me! I have only been on Armour for two weeks, but feel much better
today than I have in the past 1 1/2 years. I wish I had gone to see
her first..." (Added 11/02) Carrollton
Dr. David Chihal, Surgeon, 4325 N. Josey, Suite 101 (Trinity Hospital)
Carrollton, TX 75010 972-492-4006. A reader writes, "My gyno found a
huge lump in my thyroid and referred me to Dr. Chihal, a head and neck
surgeon. He is extremely knowledgeable about the thyroid and he explained
what a lump meant. He went into detail about what tests would need to
be performed, what they entailed, why they were necessary, and how surgery
would be carried out if I needed it. I had to have a lobectomy and he
did an amazing job. The incision is beautiful, I am lump free, and he
was wonderful throughout the entire experience. He is an excellent doctor
and surgeon. If I was going to have someone slit my throat again, I
would want it to be him." Clear Lake/Webster/Houston/Galveston
Dr. Lewis K. Clarke Clear Lake/Webster, Texas 17448 Hwy 3. Webster,
TX 77598 (281) 332-1755 I want to recommend Dr. Lewis K. Clarke. His
specialty is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and his goal for me
was to get me feeling normal again so I function as a wife and mother.
He really spent time with me and listened to me. He has his M.D. and
also a Ph.D. in neurochemistry so he knows the science behind the medicine.
He had me read your book and told me I'd see myself in those pages.
He was right. Thanks for your book and all the help your giving us out
here.
(Note: Some readers report that this doctor can be costly, and does
not take insurance. Make sure that you know in advance what costs will
be for first visit, additional visits and lab work.) Corpus Christi
A reader writes: "My doctor Jacquelin Cohn is the greatest doctor! I
had a total hysterectomy at age 30. Had no idea that I was suffering
from hormone problems. After surgery systems got worse, weight gain,
PMS to the nth degree, retaining water and pretty much had the appearance
of being pregnant. Certainly made me angry when I had all those parts
removed already. I went for 4 years going from internist to internist,
practically every doctor in our town. Finally on a playground during
my youngest son's soccer practice another mother mentioned to me that
I should find a good endocrinologist. I had never heard of that type
of doctor before. I went to the yellow pages and at that time I found
2 and called the first one on the list! Lucky for me it was Dr. Cohn!
She took down a little information, asked a few questions and reassured
me, she could handle whatever problems I was having, it was just going
to take a little time. She ran a extensive blood work and discovered
my pituitary gland had problems, prolactin levels were high. Within
a year my weight was on its way down, my attitude came up out of the
depths of hades. I felt like I was sane after all. I LOVE MY DOCTOR,
SHE WORKS MIRACLES! and her attitude towards her patients makes all
the difference in the world! Here is the info about her: Dr. Jacqueline
Cohn, 1521 S. Staples, Suite 801, Corpus Christi, Texas 78404, phone:
512-888-5794, fax: 512-887-7032."
More praise for Dr. Cohn:
"When I initially went to see Dr. Cohn, I was under the care of another
physician who was, as I found out later, undermedicating me. I felt
terrible. Dr. Cohn was so informative and genuinely sincere I had to
contain myself from hugging her! She has been my endocrinologist for
about 5 years now and I’ve never felt better. She is always willing
to listen to any complaints or suggestions you have, regardless of how
small. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an endocrinologist."
Another reader recommends Dr. J. Cohn:
"After almost 2 yrs of misery with untreated Thyroid cancer and doctors
telling me it was "my age"[Hmm, I didn't know life was over at 41],
or stress, and I hope you are all reading this because you know who
you are, I found Dr. Cohn who gave me my life back, she listens, she
explains and she cares. Thanks to her I feel like my old self again,
something I thought would NEVER happen." (Added 11/02)
Another reader adds:
"I, too, was under the care of another endocrinologist when I found
Dr. Cohn. Over a 20-year period I had gone to 15 different doctors trying
to get answers to my health problems. One had, in fact, put me on thyroid
replacement, but at a dose that turned out to be half of what I needed.
The others had decided I was little more than a hypochondriac. Dr. Cohn
believed me when I told her about my symptoms. Instead of putting her
faith in my test results, which were always normal, she treated my symptoms.
Because of her the unknown thyroid cancer I had when I came to her was
found and removed. Thanks to Dr. Cohn's amazing care I am alive." (Added
11/02)
More praise from a reader for Dr. Cohn:
"Dr. Cohn was recommended to me at the time I was pregnant with my second
child. I see her on a regular basis for my thyroid condition as well
as my diabetes and high blood pressure. I also suffer from cellulitis
of both legs. She recommended to me to stay home from work on a more
permanent basis. I worked as a school teacher. She helped me with all
the paperwork so that I could stay home and elevate my legs so that
they would not get swollen and infected. That was a year and a half
ago and I have not had any problems with swelling of the legs. This
has kept me out of hospitals. She sees me on a monthly basis to monitor
my condition and even takes time from her very busy schedule to call
her patients with their results from the lab. She explains everything
very thoroughly. All her patients are very lucky to have as their doctor."
(added 1/04)
A reader writes:
"I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia because of the never ending pain,
exhaustion, and weight gain. I had been to several doctors including
specialists in several fields for at least two years. After my first
visit with Dr. Cohn, she determined that they Synthroid was not good
for me, that I needed to take thyroid. I also have goiters which she
took the time to explain to me and generally made me feel a lot more
comfortable. Aside from being a genuinely nice lady, she has virtually
cured me! I can stop taking all those sleeping pills, pain pills, every
other kind of pill! And I'm back down to 125 lbs! Thank you, Dr. Cohn!"

Robert DeVries, MD, Family medicine physician, 214 368 6197, SW corner
of Preston and Forest. "A friendly and interesting fellow, he was a
researcher in endocrine and fertility issues who now does medicine in
private practice. He is hypothyroid himself, as is his wife, so he is
very current on the issue and sympathetic as well. His office manager/receptionist
is kinda wacky, but just let it slide. He listens well and uses quality
labs for his blood work. From the Netherlands originally, his accent
is a bit thick, but he has been in Texas for 30 years and speaks perfect
English. I feel very safe in his hands." (Submission thanks to the Moonlady

Another reader adds:
"A friendly and interesting fellow, he was a researcher in endocrine
and fertility issues who now does medicine in private practice. He is
hypothyroid himself, as is his wife, so he is very current on the issue
and sympathetic as well. His office manager/receptionist Debbie, is
very refreshing and in control of the office, she is a extremely capable
Manager, who usually has multiple tasks in process at once, she is very
friendly, you simply must visit with her and get to know her. Dr. DeVries
listens well and uses quality labs for his blood work. From the Netherlands
originally, his accent is still noticeable, but he has been in Texas
for 30 years and speaks perfect English. My condition is noticeably
improving whereas to last MD I went to (for a year) did not have any
success." (Added 11/02)
More praise from a reader for Dr. DeVries:
"After 13 yrs. of being ignored and told I had to live with the effects
of hypothyroid because a stupid piece of paper said my T4 was in normal
range, I have found this wonderful human who is a doctor that will treat
me as a person and not that piece of paper. He is a God send." (added
1/04)
Another fan:
"I was undiagnosed for 4 years. He completed a 90 minute health history and head to toe exam. He has
sure I had Hashimotos , but the blood tests revealed hypothyroidism. He is kind, compassionate, a good
listener, loves people and medicine. He believes you should listen to the patient because they know their
body." (Added 1/06) Dallas

I might have a thyroid problem and tested for it... he was right. He
listens to what I have to say, discusses possibilities and treatment
options, and tries to rule out or find out any other problems. He doesn't
rush things and is extremely helpful. Although he is a rheumatologist,
he has been helpful with not only my rheumatology needs but my endocrinology
needs as well." (Added 6/03) Dallas

Another patient writes:
"An excellent endocrinologist....She saved a friend's foot overnight
before the scheduled amputation (from diabetes). He's been doing great
on it ever since. She really knows her stuff, especially for women.
Whether or not you like her bedside manner, or office manner is another
matter you would have to decide." (Submission thanks to the Moonlady
News endocrine list)
Another patient writes:
"You'll probably get several responses recommending Dr. Marina Johnson.
She has an office in Preston Center. I've never met a doctor that listened
and thought about what you've told her like Dr. Johnson. Very intelligent
and knowledgeable! She's an endocrinologist, but absolutely focuses
on the whole body. She's into functional medicine and works with supplements
and, as far as I can tell is open to, if not involved in, alternative
therapies, as well as with prescription meds - depending on what's needed."
(Submission thanks to the Moonlady News endocrine list)
Another patient writes:
"Brilliant she was a pharmacist before she became an endocrinologist
MD" (Submission thanks to the Moonlady News endocrine list)
Another patient writes:
"The endo I go to now has an office in Dallas. Yes she is costly, but
your life is invaluable! Marina Johnson is a gal who uses a wide range
of treatments - she uses herbs when called for and only escalates to
drugs when needed. She also uses only the best labs for testing. She
used them for what they are good at. My blood work goes to 4 or 5 places
depending on what she is testing for. Your erratic results may well
be a result of a bad lab. They are more common than we want to think.
If your insurance will do an 80/20 split or 70/30 split, go see Dr.
j. She is gifted, intuitive and SKILLED at her work. She was also a
pharmacist prior to becoming an endo. Be sure to tell the office you
need a second opinion FAST. Have them get test results from your current
doc - that will save you some time. She is heavily booked. Even without
insurance that would cover her work, I would keep going to this woman
- she has been right about everything she thought was wrong with me
and I keep getting better each step of the way. The most recent epiphany
was that my silver fillings were poisoning me. We got them all out this
last month, using a dentist who takes the proper precautions for removing
them. Dr J then gave me a couple of mineral infusions to help flush
the mercury out of me. The ugly metallic taste in my mouth is now gone
completely. It was gone as soon as the filings were out! I can drink
decaf now and enjoy it. The least expensive way to work with her is
to let her call the shots and do what she thinks needs to be done IMMEDIATELY.
I made her take the slow road and it cost a lot more - especially on
my health. I was really sick before we got to one of the major issues
and it just happened to be something she thought was wrong after reviewing
my health history at our first meeting. TRUST HER. Use a credit card,
empty your IRA - but use her." (Submission thanks to the Moonlady News

Another patient writes:
"I stand by my previous recommendation of Dr. Marina Johnson. The good
news is that she now has two offices, one in the mid-cities and the
other in Preston Center in North Dallas! She's the only board certified
endocrinologist I know who is skilled in both traditional medicine and
alternative methods." (Submission thanks to the Moonlady News endocrine

in the area of medicine in which he practices, however we all know that
doesn't always make for a "good doctor" you would recommend to others.
Dr. Marynick has treated me with great respect during my diagnosis and
treatment of Graves Disease. When I came to him, I had lost 90 pounds
(in 6 months) and in great denial that something was seriously wrong
with me... little did I know that I was days away from the disease hitting
me very hard -- possibly losing my life at any day for the following
4-5 weeks. He has been a patient doctor, a teacher of the disease, a
comforter at many times. He has hand written me on a couple of occasions
following up and letting me know that he is thinking of me. He also
sent a short note telling me he was sorry that he was out of town when
I needed him one weekend - but he had a very good doctor on call for
him that I did speak with. He has taught me about this disease as well
as my husband, he has been medically on top of the problem for the past
6 weeks with a great confidence I would become well again. He has handed
me pieces of books to read, articles to read, and suggested books and
reviewed web sites so that I do not get bad information. He has been
open, honest, and to the point - at times the directness is exactly
what I needed to snap me into reality. On top of his wonderful qualities,
he has surrounded himself with a very well medically trained staff with
great compassion. You feel like an extension of that office and it is
not a scary place to come visit. When there is bad news (or good news
as I look back - they saved my life!) they are there with you until
you are okay %26 every question you have has been answered. I know Dr.
Marynick is only human - but to my family of 5 he has kept us together
and is one of our heroes!"
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Marynick takes the fear out of the unknown by providing conscientious and detailed information
about your condition. He was able to identify and help treat a brain tumor I have had. It's position and
location has caused me to miscarry on many occasions. He is thoughtful, considerate of your time and
expense, and works to thoroughly review medical history to determine the best approach for each patient.
I am thankful he was recommended to me." (Added 6/05) Dallas

hormones, menopause, adrenal glands, etc. She is compassionate, listens thoroughly and incorporate
mind, body and spirit. She also has great seminars and classes for total healing. I've never been so

up with all the new research in lots of areas. He is willing to consider
additional therapy for anyone whose TSH is above 2 or so, if they are
symptomatic. He probably saved my husband's life last year, by recommending
a routine PSA (prostate cancer test) even though my husband is younger
than the age they routinely order that test, and was asymptomatic. (they
found cancer and successfully operated.) Dr. Masciarelli is a kind,
caring guy who will educate you on your disease, whatever it may be,

Dr. Christine Hernandez, Internal Medicine, El Paso. A reader describes
Dr. Hernandez, "After seeing an endocrinologist for 6 months and not
making very good progress on synthetic T3/T4 meds, I have been blessed
to have started seeing Dr. Christine Hernandez. She is very familiar
with treating Thyroid patients, patients with conversion problems, and
has had a lot of success with treating patients with Armour Thyroid.
She will listen to you, and is not threatened by patients being informed
about their disease. I highly recommend her. She has a very busy practice,
and it may take a while to get in to see her but it is worth the wait."
Another recommendation:
"Has been committed to working with me to get my thyroid levels under
control for the past 8 years. She listens, is willing to read the books
I bring her and has done extensive research on hypothyroidism in order
to assure good quality of life for me and others who suffer from hypothyroidism.
I am now feeling so good and I am even losing the weight that I put
on over the years. She has been so supportive and so willing to try
new things and it has worked. I am now on a combination of Synthroid
and Thyrolar and have been stable on this dosage for over a year." (Added

me to anew internet site...usually not in the U.S. that is doing wonderful
new things in the world of medicine...after being thrown out of a doctor's
office for mentioning Armour...Dr. g is a breath of fresh air who provides
a balanced view."
Another recommendation:
I can't say enough about Dr. Grebennikov!! He's awesome in every meaning
of the word. I have gone to MANY Dr.'s concerning my hypothyroidism
and he's the first one that both listened to my concerns and was INTELLIGENT
enough to know what to do about them! He tested me very thoroughly which
hadn't been done before. He doesn't just rely on the TSH but looks further.
My TSH was in the "normal" ranges but I knew something was wrong. He
tested my antibodies and many other things as well. Turns out, my antibodies
were 676 out of a range of normal from 0-34! AND, he's not just calling
in a prescription but wants to see me to discuss treatment. All in all,
he's thorough, friendly, extremely intelligent and a top notch Dr. to
go to if you need a good thyroid Dr. I'm driving from 30 miles away
if that tells you anything!" (Added 6/02).
Another fan of Dr. Grebennikov:
"I have finally met a doctor who is not afraid of the informed patient!
Dr. Grebennikov listened to what I had been through since my thyroidectomy....the
weight gain, the general feeling of blah, my reasons for wanting Armour,
etc. He prescribed Armour for me and for the first time in a year, I
feel great! He is a very caring man whose ultimate concern is his patients
well being. Quite a refreshing change from the other doctors I've seen.
I've already recommended him to several others, including my adult daughter."
(Added 6/02).
Another reader recommends Dr. Vladimir Grebennikov:
"I went to Dr. G because I found his name on this list and live near
by. I had been going to doctors outside of my health plan and paying
top dollar. I did have some improvement with these other doctors but
there was plenty of room for more improvement. What I found was a doctor
who thinks outside of the box. Loves to talk to the informed patient.
He is very knowledgeable but is willing to learn. Even though my TSH
was .07 he still increased my dose because there was room for an increase
based upon my Free T-3 and Free T-4 levels and my symptoms. He treats
patients based on symptoms and not numbers. He has even read Dr. Jeffries
book "Safe uses of Cortisol." He checks your cortisol levels and not
just your thyroid levels. He is a very nice and caring doctor who will
work with you to find the answers. He even suggests herbs or vitamins
he feels could be of benefit based on your health and labs. (No he isn't
selling them either.)" (Added 11/02)
A reader writes: "He
really listens. He doesn't brush off, gloss over or assume, as so many
of my previous doctors have done. He answers questions." (Added:

"My endocrinologist is THE best doctor I have ever had the pleasure
of meeting - and from working both in mental health and hospice, I've
met A LOT of doctors.... However, I didn't write before because he is
all the way in Fort Worth at the Harris Methodist Hospital Professional
Building.... His name is Dr. Kenneth Mair and phone number is (817)
820-2890. When I first went to see him in '97 and was dx with Grave's
disease I do remember talking to him briefly about alternative tx's
as opposed to surgery and radioactive medicine to take out or kill the
thyroid... I ended up taking the radioactive pill to kill my thyroid
(which put me into hypothyroidism for which I now take synthetic thyroid
meds) Once, stabilized, I visit him once a year.... He's really a sweet
gentle soul." (Submission thanks to the Moonlady News endocrine list)

treat diabetics, which of course is a growing problem in our society.
Mine was the same and was just writing the scripts for Synthroid. The
same with my previous ObGyn, in fact this man was letting me die. I’m
lucky my baby is healthy and smart. Dr. McWherter gives wellness lectures
at the local health food store, works closely with cancer patients and
their diets, and supplements. He has a complete regime for hypothyroid
patients. He does not prescribe Synthroid at all. He has had countless
conversations with his colleagues about prescreening women to get baselines,
and prescribing natural thyroid over Synthroid. He spent a lot of time
with me. And now I am going back for a follow up and a prescription
change. I cant tell enough people how great this doctor is, I am glad

I found him by accident. He wrote the book called "Thyroid Solution".
I just happened to notice he was near where I live. He understands totally

and caring. The first doctor I ever went to that wasn't worried about
your weight, except to help you find a way to lose it. He's amazing!"

"First and foremost, Dr. Arem specializes in thyroid disorders; he's
not just an endo. He has written books, on of which The Thyroid Solution
and contributed quite a bit to researching thyroid disorders. I saw
a few physicians, all of which wanted to treat my numbers while I was
quite symptomatic. Dr. Arem, however, knows exactly what to look for
and works with you to treat the symptoms. Dr. Arem does not take care
of his insurance claims. You pay cash in the office and he gives you

He freely prescribes Armour and Cytomel and works with you to find out

A patient writes:
"He was a pharmacist until
he went to med. school. He explains everything in detail and knows medicine. He especially knows the
thyroid. His wife is his assistant and often his children help out. It is truly a family practice. I have never
felt better! " (Added: Dec. 04)
A reader writes:
"I went to see Dr.Launius after wasting my time with my primary
care doc who told me to get on Weight Watchers and quit looking for
excuses. I was frustrated because after 2 yrs with a trainer and on diets,
no weight loss and increasing fatigue, headaches, hair loss, depression.
Dr. Launius was the FIRST doc who really listened to me not just my
numbers. He ordered labs and my T3 was very low (funny because my prim
care doc refused to do further tests because my TSH were normal, EVEN though
lab was using old ranges. I am working with Dr Launius in adjusting my
meds and am feeling better. His wife is great. Anyone wishing a doctor who
cares and LISTENS to patient not just TSH levels, go see him. He is WORTH
the drive from anywhere in the Metroplex." (Added June 2005)

"Great, caring doctor! He understands thyroids completely! He is hypo himself! So he
has experienced a lot of our symptoms first hand. I drive from Austin to see him. Most excellent care
and very affordable. He allows me to get my lab work done here in Austin so that I can utilize my
insurance for that part. He is good at diagraming everything for you so that you understand what is
happening in your own body. Very thorough in his examination; spends 2 hours with you on your first
visit! His nurse, Lisa, is great about helping your with lab papers, appts or adjusting your meds. My only
concern is that he does not treat adrenal issues. If you don't have those issues then he is perfect!" (Added

information that I can find about my problem and bring information to him and he will go over all the

patient. He understands that every patient is different and wants to do what is best for each person."

Health Clinic 100 Tall Pines Rd, Suite #4 Longview, TX 75605 (903) 236-8888.
A reader tells us, "Dr. Rasheed was recommended to me by the Director
of Nursing where I work. She was the first physician to really listen
to me regarding my perception of simply not being able to lose weight,
no matter what I tried. (One physician told me that he guessed I would
just live longer than most if there was a famine, with no practical
solutions whatsoever). After taking an extensive history from me, Dr.
Rasheed ordered more specialized and specific tests for my thyroid and
later diagnosed subclinical hypothyroidism. She began me on Armour thyroid,
and prescribed a very complete regime for healthy weight loss. This
includes almost daily aerobic exercise, drinking a great deal of water,
keeping a food diary, and eating 1000 calories or less a day. All of
these I had been doing for years (thinking that if I didn’t, it would
only make my gradual weight gain all the worse). The best I could do
is to maintain (or gain no more than one or two pounds a month)...I
did not lose. Now, with the appropriate treatment, I am losing weight
in a very healthy manner. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance
at living my life "normally," and feel very blessed. Dr. Rasheed continues
to meet with her patients on a regular basis, helping problem-solve
minor issues before they become major. Finally, Dr. Rasheed used to
be an anesthesiologist, but turned to this area of medicine because
it really interested her. She also has had to work on weight loss, and
has done very well. So she truly does understand the battle, and has
always treated me with kindness and respect." Lubbock
Dr. Steve Robinson, 3801 21st Street, Suite A, Lubbock, Texas 79410.
(806) 792-2815. A reader provides this information, "There are three
primary reasons that I believe Dr. Robinson should be added to the Top
Doctor list: 1) Expertise. Before becoming a medical doctor, Dr. Robinson
was a research scientist. He knows how to read research critically and
to separate "good" research from the others. He also continues to read
and to maintain his level of knowledge regarding the most current practices
in medicine. 2) Open-Mindedness. Dr. Robinson is very sincere about
helping his patients. He is a good listener and treats his patients
with respect. He is very open-minded regarding treatments that work.
3) Personal Interest. One of Dr. Robinson's first success stories regarding
hypothyroid conditions was his wife, who had suffered for years before
he took on her case. He seems to have a special interest in endocrine
and autoimmune issues."
Another patient writes:
"Dr. E. Steve Robinson-prescribes Armour and natural bio-equivalent
compounded hormones. He, his wife and his daughter are all hypothyroid.
Reproductive hormones are his special area of expertise. He takes most
major PPO insurance (no HMO's) and is extremely good at making the insurance
companies pay. I and many others find it worth our while to fly in to
see him. He is willing to treat children with thyroid problems. (It
is hard to find a doc in Texas who will treat children with thyroid
disease.)" Lubbock
M.M. Bakdash, M.D., Endocrinologist, 806-793-8616. Dr. Bakdash truly
seems to care for his patients health and emotional well being. If you
call his office and have concerns he will get on the phone and talk
to you. This isn't unusual unless you consider the fact that he will
get on the phone even if he is busy with someone else at the time. He
encourages you to contact him with concerns and he seems to be compassionate
about his patients. I also think he is a very intelligent doctor. He
diagnosed a skin condition to my Graves disease that had stumped other
doctors/including dermatologists - for years. Lubbock
Alice Pangle, DO, 3303 University Ave, TX 79410, 806-795-6466,
www.southplainsbariatrics.com. A reader writes: "I went to three different doctors in Lubbock, including
an endocrinologist, and none of them wanted to consider that I could possibly have a problem with
thyroid if my blood tests were normal. Finally, I found Dr. Pangle's website and emailed her about my
problems. I had an appointment with her about a week later and she is wonderful! Don't be deterred by
the fact that her clinic focuses on bariatrics (weight loss). If you are not interested in the weight loss
supplements, she will not even try to talk you into taking them. Dr. Pangle says that if you listen to a
patient long enough she/he will tell you what her problem is. She spent over an hour talking with me and
quickly diagnosed a hypothyroid based on my symptoms. She is very much in favor of Armour thyroid
and that is what she prescribed based on my symptoms. I began to feel better almost immediately. The
only down side to Dr. Pangle's clinic is that they do not accept any form of insurance because most of
their work is for weight loss. However, she only requires that you actually come in to see her once a year
and the rest of the time you can just conference on the phone for no charge. Not many doctors are willing
to talk to you on the phone, but she is happy to do that in order to adjust doses or talk to you about
symptoms. Overall, I credit Dr. Pangle for giving me my life back because I was so sick with
hypothyroid and no other doctor wanted to even consider that my symptoms were genuine and could be
treated." (Added 6/05) McAllen

was the only doctor who would listen when I described my symptoms. I
was sleeping up to 48 hours without waking up, my skin was so dry, I
was so depressed, my weight gain was over the top, and I had a goiter.
These are just a few of my symptoms. Also, my leg would swell tremendously.
I was losing my hair. All the symptoms were there, but the tests revealed
a normal thyroid level. Gary finally decided to treat the patient and
not the test. The difference a thyroid supplement has made in my life
is remarkable. I am no longer sleeping for days at a time. In fact,
I had grown so use to feeling bad, that I thought it was normal. I just

knew I was on the wrong medication. She took me off of Synthroid and put me on Armour
Thyroid. She listens to your symptoms and reads results of each test.
She truly cares about her patients!!" (Added: June 2004)
Another fan:
"Dr. Perlman listens to her patients, and does not go by lab results alone. She
takes into account the

hypothyroidism. I have been ill for almost six years. I drove 300 miles to see Dr. Perlman in Odessa,
Texas. My family Doctor refused to acknowledge that I had thyroid problems. My family Doctor refused
to refer me to an Endocrine Doctor. I have been blessed by finding Dr. Perlman. She was so
compassionate and understanding my problems. She is the only Doctor that had true feelings for her
patients. She put me on Synthroid and hormones. I have only been on them for one week, and I can
already tell a big difference in my health. I am 55 years old and not any other Doctor was understanding
to my needs. Dr. Perlman took a long time to discuss my problems . She made me feel very comfortable
talking to her. I would recommend her to anyone whom is having trouble with hormones and thyroids.
I was blessed to find her. Thank You, Dr. Perlman." (Added: Dec. 04)

Another fan:
"I had received verbal recommendations from various medical and healthcare professionals about Dr.
Perlman when I received abnormal lab results that baffled other physicians. I was delighted to meet Dr.
Perlman and truly felt cared for as a fellow human being. I have been in critical care and emergency
medicine for approximately twenty years to date. I work as a flight nurse/ paramedic in the state of
Texas, and I fully understand the importance of being diagnosed correctly and the importance of time
frames. In my profession, this needs to be done in split seconds and minutes. People's lives depend upon
it! I also know that some of us "health professionals" can be the most stubborn patients because of our
knowledge base! I have grown to respect and trust Dr. Perlman as a colleague and a friend. Dr. Perlman
made a diagnosis and taken action that has saved my life, LITERALLY! She has enabled me to return
to my care of patients and to stay alive for my family (and it is not a small family network!). God bless
you and all of your efforts. You are truly a role model to be followed!" (Added 1/06)

exams and blood work and really listened. Even though my TSH came back
in "normal" range from the lab, she was willing to prescribe me a trial
dosage of Levoxyl based on my symptoms and family history. Well at the
end of the trial period all my symptoms were gone and my goiter, small
to begin with, had shrunk. Needless to say, I'm still on medication.
My TSH is below 2 and feel back to normal after 2 years of feeling tired
and stupid. My mom has started going to Dr. Chiu, and found out that
she was under medicated. Now she feels better than she has in the past

Another reader recommends Dr. Chiu:
"Unlike my GP, who had diagnosed and was treating my thyroid condition,
Dr. Chiu is very knowledgeable about my condition and believes that
I am, too. She is extremely thorough in her exams and, maybe more importantly,
listens to what I am saying. At my first visit, after taking history
and looking at prior blood results from my GP, she immediately upped
my dosage of Levoxyl, even giving me a week's worth, until my new blood
work came in and she could determine the dosage we should try. I feel

I was told I was fine by my GP and my GYN, even though I had every symptom
of low thyroid and felt awful. I am a very pro-active patient which
is offensive to many doctors. I went in to Dr. Dons’ office for my first
appt. armed with information about T3 protocol and case histories of
people exactly like me whose symptoms were relieved with treatment for
low thyroid. Dr. Dons was one of the nicest people I ever met. Spent
2 hours talking with me and examining me. Treated me the person not
my lab values. Dr. Dons was open to trying T3 protocol in addition to
Synthroid. Very open minded, caring, and knowledgeable. An answer to
prayer in every way. Also Dr. Dons is open to TRH testing if the patient
feels strongly they need it. In all my experience with doctors I have
never met one like Dr. Dons."
Another patient writes:
"I want to second your reader's recommendation on Dr. Robert Dons. I
went to him with symptoms of a thyroid disorder, and he spent about
2 hours with me examining me, taking history, asking questions, and
really getting to the bottom of my problem. On subsequent visits, he's
been very kind and thorough. He's never reluctant to order a test if
he thinks I need it. He has always been able to see me within a day

staff is wonderful, too. The office is clean and comfortable, and they

"I would like to second the recommendation for Dr. Diane Fetchick. When
I went to see her, she was the second endocrinologist I'd gone to see.
After months of overmedication and poor treatment, she recognized immediately
that there were other issues (in addition to the Hashimoto's) contributing
to my symptoms. She looks at the big picture and really pays attention
to your specific complaints. Because of her recommendations, I found
out that I have severe allergies and a very deviated septum which together,
perpetuates monthly sinus infections with constant headaches and fatigue.
She suggested a low carb diet to see if high insulin could be a culprit
in my inability to lose weight. And switched my T4 to see if the edema
would diminish. So far she's 3 for 3 and I'm feeling better than I have
in a long time. There is a considerable wait to get in to see her…never

I asked Dr. Hernandez what level of TSH he was hoping to get me to.
He said he would look at TSH but the bottom line was how I felt. He

"Dr. Kathy LaCivita Is the best doctor that we have seen in San Antonio.
My husband has low testosterone levels and she helped diagnose the problem

Another recommendation for Dr. Menendez:
"After visiting a succession of specialists for 2 years and still having
major symptoms, I found that Dr. Menendez practiced in Kerrville on
Tuesdays. Dr. Menendez walked in and touched my neck and said, ‘You
have a goiter. Your thyroid must be low; let’s try a clinical trial
of Synthroid.’ I was so relieved not to be told my levels a little low
but still in the normal range and that I should just take more Prozac.
I had told the OB-GYN, the Internist, and several other doctors that
low thyroid ran in my family and asked repeatedly for help. No one listened.

Dr. James Mahoney, Integrative Medicine, 550 North Carroll Ave.,
Southlake,
TX 76092, 817-481-2444, jjm@centeru.com. "Dr. Mahoney is a Christian
doctor who believes in listening to his patients and not just depend
on lab tests. He says that he learns a lot just from listening to his
patients. He recognizes that most everyone comes in with symptoms which
usually shows up in lab test but he listens to his patients to help
find the origin of the symptom. Thus he doesn't just treat the symptoms
as most doctors do. He is open to using alternative medicines. He is
very intuitive and thorough." (added 1/04) Tomball
Dr. Jason DeMattia, Family Doctor, 700 Lawrence St., Tomball, TX 77375,
281-351-7155. A reader writes:"For nine years other doctors overlooked my thyroid
symptoms because my TSH test came back normal. Dr. DeMattia, after hearing the list of symptoms did
further testing beyond just normal blood work and found that my thyroid gland was swollen and had
multiple cysts on it. He is working to get my TSH levels below 1 at this time. Finally, a Dr. that listened
to me and how I felt." (Added Apr 06) Tyler
Dr. Brian Robinson, Endocrinology, 910 E. Houston, Suite 250, Tyler,
Tx 75702, 903-510-1173, http://www.tmfhs.org/doctordisplay.php?tclinic=10&id=614.
"We sought Dr. Robinson for a second opinion for our eleven year old
son who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and a goiter. We found him
well educated on thyroid diseases and his manner with children was superb."

Dr. Dale J. Bradley, DO, Family Practice, 1000 East Fifth Street, Tyler,
TX 75701, 903-596-3862, "Dr. Bradley is the first doctor in Tyler that
I have found (and I’ve been through just about all of them) that treats
me as a patient instead of just treating my blood tests. He actually
listened to me and wasn’t offended when I quoted recent studies or thyroid
articles. He does not have an ‘I know better than you do’ attitude and
worked with me to make me feel normal again. He was the first to recommend
Cytomel and also the first to check my T3 levels. He is very compassionate
and explains things in language I can understand. He answered every
question I had in a straightforward manner and didn’t side-step anything
or try to sugarcoat any of his answers." (Added 4/04) Victoria
Dr. C. Richard Mabray, Environmental/Endocrine,Ob/Gyn,Nutrition, 115
Medical Drive, Suite 202, Victoria, Texas 77904, 361-574-9697. "After
over a year of very ill health, 55 pound wt loss, and virtually no help
because my labs were low, but "normal", Dr. Mabray intervened. He ran
saliva tests, blood tests and explained the correlations and his concerns.
His hope is to reactivate the endocrine and immune systems by first
balancing the hormones my body should have been producing. His emphasis
is on living life, not living an illness. He listens very well and spent
almost two hours questioning and listening on the first visit. His office
staff is attentive, knowledgeable and cooperative. He has been more
than wonderful with the written documentation I need for various insurances.
When I had an allergic reaction to a prescription I was listened to
and asked to participate in determining the best avenue and subsequent
treatment plan for me. Because of the severity of previous allergic
reactions, he placed me on a desiccated thyroid like Armour, but with
less allergenic fillers (Bio Throid) which I tolerate well. He was cautious
with advancing the dose of thyroid so my very sensitive system could
balance itself each step of the way. He has been great about refills
and even continuing the Nystatin powder from a previous doctor. His
first avenue of treatment is usually the adrenals, but he did give me
thyroid first because high TSH came back before the adrenal studies.
He has changed me from a walking shadow to having a sense of well being,
although there are still definite ups and downs after a little over
3 months of treatment. When I heard about him a good while back, he
was not taking new patients. I admire an MD who can say "This is as
big a patient load as I can effectively handle". It was well worth the
wait. As I read on About.com of the treatment modalities of other docs,
I am impressed that Dr. Mabray seems to really be in the flow of the
best ones."
A reader writes:
"Dr. Mabray has been my doctor for almost 30 years. He has helped me in so many
ways over the years. The first was through a difficult pregnancy and brought my healthy baby boy into
the world. Next came finding my low thyroid and treating it in natural ways as well teaching myself and
my family about thyroid problems. Next came fibroids in my breast which he taught me how to take care
of in nutritionally. Then came giving me Prolotherapy after suffering in severe back pain after a major
car wreck. No one else was ever able to give me any hope. All I was told was I'd have to learn to live
with the pain. One visit to Dr. Mabray and one session of Prolotherapy, I'm 98% free of pain. Most days
I don't hurt at all. He'd told me that it could take about 3 treatments. I strongly recommend Dr. Mabray.
He takes the time to talk to you and answer any questions. Never does he seem to want to hurry you up."

Dr. Rolando G. Arafiles, Family Practice, 1606 E. Brazos St, Suite A,
Victoria, TX 77901, 361-570-3651. A reader writes: "Dr. A. is such a joy! He’s very knowledgeable,
down to earth, truly compassionate, and open minded. Some tests and treatments are not covered by
insurance, but he’s willing to work with you. An appointment with him is like sitting down with a
family member. He’s just very pleasant to be around! Always happy and upbeat. And, he prescribes
Armour! I feel very blessed to have found him!" (Added 10/05) Woodlands/Conroe/North of Houston
Dr. Marco Giannotti, OB/Gyn Women's Healthcare Affiliates, P.A. 920
Medical Plaza Drive, Suite 310 The Woodlands, TX 77380 281-367-6836
OR 800 Riverwood Court, Suite 100 Conroe, TX 77304 936-539-1434 I went
to Dr. Giannotti when I became pregnant. I had preexisting hypothyroidism,
and Dr. Giannotti proved to be very knowledgeable about thyroid problems.
He quite willingly runs all of the thyroid tests, and is willing to
work with endos, internists, etc. when a patient's case goes beyond
his knowledge. He has a very calm, friendly, and professional manner
that really puts me at my ease, and he keeps me informed of details
and encourages and answers questions. I can't praise him highly enough.
I also have heard good things about Dr. Ritter, one of Dr. Giannotti's
partners who is also quite knowledgeable about thyroid conditions. Another
partner, Dr. Meyer, has also been quite helpful to me when I've called
after hours. I am very happy with Dr. Giannotti and Women's Healthcare.
Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
