ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.

his ability to treat both my severe PMS symptoms along with reducing
the severity and duration of my seizures naturally through hormone creams.

He is very open to T3 therapy and has treated mild hypothyroid for over
10 years. Gives more credit to basal body temp and symptoms than lab
tests. Holistic focus. Down to earth. Expect to wait in the office a
long time though."

reader writes: "D. Sneller is a Great Dr. He will listen to you, and not rush you out of his office to hurry
on to his next patient. He is compassionate and is open to all questions and any research that you may
want him to examine. Dr. Sneller pays attention to symptoms such as low -high or fluctuating blood
pressures, high cholestrol, blood clots extreme exhaustion, thinning hair , blurred vision, allergies, female
problems and many more that alone or combination points to a problem thyroid. Blood work is NOT
accurate in determining thyroid problems!! You must get a thyroid scan! or Ultra Sound. Dr. Sneller

(Added 6/05) Bryn Mawr
Dr. Ady Djerassi, 830 Old Lancaster Rd. Suite 204 Bryn Mawr -- PA
19010.
610-527-1121. "I decided to try Dr. Djerassi on a referral from my family
doctor. What a pleasant surprise! She took a lot of time with me and
was interested in how I was feeling not just the numbers from my blood
test. She was caring and concerned and I felt very comfortable explaining
all of my many symptoms. She did not make me feel llike I was imagining
any of my symptoms. She explained things very clearly and responded
to all of my questions. I am so happy that I found her. Dr. Djerassi
is a Top Doc!"
Another reader recommends Dr. Djerassi:
"Personable, really listens, good sense of humor- a down right NORMAL
person. My first time seeing her per this site's Top Doc recommendations,
thank you so much. I liked her a lot and highly recommend this specialist
to all for her outstanding bedside manner. Very caring and knowledgeable
doctor. A true gem!!!" (Added 11/02)
Another fan:
I went to Dr. Djerassi based on her referrals from this site. I am VERY VERY
happy that I did. She
listens to my concerns and doesn't dismiss anything I have to say. After two
years of under treatment
from another doctor who let my Hashi's get the better of me, it really has been
refreshing seeing Dr.
Djerassi and having a doctor who returns your phone calls (even if that means
calling you at home, from
her home). Dr. Djerassi is truly a Top-Doc! (Added Dec. 04) Bryn Mawr
Dr. Cheryl Koch, Endocrinology, 830 Old Lancaster Road, Suite 202, Bryn
Mawr, PA 19010, 610-527-1604, "She listens to what I say and always
works with me. She is very clear with explanations. I really like her.
She is great!" (Added 4/04) Camp Hill
Dr. William Richwine, D. O. Natural/Complimentary Medicine 2135
Market
St. Camp Hill, PA 17011 717-761-0601 www,naturalhealthdoctor.com. A
reader writes: "While he uses lab tests frequently, he will adjust medications
on how you feel not just on lab numbers. Armour Thyroid is his preferred
med for hypothyroid problems." (Added 4/03)
Another reader recommends Dr. Richine:
"Dr. Richwine is a truly caring doctor. He even called me from his vacation
to ask me questions regarding symptoms and made an appt. for me. He
listens to your symptoms as well as your labs. He is not "against" Armour.
He is a kind man." (added 1/04) Cherry Hill/NJ
Dr. Anthony Jennings, Endocrinology, Covered Bridge Medical Bldg,
Covered
Bridge Rd., Cherry Hill, NJ 08034-2995, 609-428-6768. "My friend in
Pennsylvania recommended Dr. Jennings since she goes to his Philadelphia
office. She has hyperthyroidism, but felt I could benefit from another
opinion on my being hypothyroid. I even liked his answering machine
message, which asked patients to leave the time when it would be convenient
for them to come in, and he would try to accommodate that schedule.
He is my third try. The first doctor in Linwood, NJ was yelling at me
when I asked questions about my case, claiming I needed to "take responsibility
for my health and just accept how I felt." I like the second doctor,
but wanted another opinion. Dr. Jennings spent the most initial time
with me, drawing diagrams and explaining lab numbers in detail. He also
explained the correlation between thyroid hormones and estrogen for
peri-menopausal women. It was very educational and answered many of
my concerns regarding the two conditions happening at the same time.
He's a real gentleman and a gentle man." Cranberry Township
Doctor Rice General Practitioner 73 Dutilh Rd Cranberry Twp, PA 16066

Dr. John Hipps General Practice RR #1 - North Creek Emporium PA 15834
(814) 486-2084 cntrydoc@penn.com A reader writes: "Dr. Hipps goes beyond
the conventional in spotting thyroid disorder and does the more sensitive
testing that VA & ordinary HMO physicians do not do. He is caring &
up on the latest aspects of this problem. He has had a long practice
in rural PA. For more information about Dr. Hipps, he has a website:
cntrydoc@penn.com. And he has written a memoir. I have been under his
care for five years; he is the first one who recognized my thyroid problem.
I recommend him; he is not like the "factory doctors" at HMO's. His
specialty is Occupational & general medicine." (Added 11/02) Erie
Deborah Bishop MD, Family Practice, Elk Valley Medical Center, 5165
Imperial Parkway, Girard PA 164 10, 814-774-3128 "I've known Dr. Bishop
since she was a resident. I have always found her to be intelligent
and very sharp. She is also very willing to listen to your concerns
as well as all her other patients-- so you can expect to wait for her
no matter when you have an appointment. I always try to get in at 8:30
a.m. Granted she didn't diagnose my subclinical hypothyroidism but she
was willing to listen to me and did end up prescribing thyroid replacement.,
One policy that patients should be aware of is that she will not call
with "normal" lab results. You have to call her or make an appointment
and you have to be willing to be a partner if not in charge of your
health care." Erie

the best care possible." (Added 11/02) Greensburg
Dr. Dawn Santora, rheumatologist. 530 South Street, Medical Commons
One, Greensburg PA, 724-850-6990. "I was referred to Dr. Santora by
my primary care physician when I complained of joint pain and fatigue.
After studying my blood test I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Dr.
Santora still gave me a complete physical exam and explained more to
me about my disease them my family doctor. She was very patient with
me and listened to all my symptoms and complaints." Greenville
Dr. Roy Kerry, ENT, and thyroid specialist 17 6th. Ave. Greenville,
Pa. 1-724-588-2600. Writes one reader, "This doctor treated me with
Cytomel when Synthroid and Armour both failed. I thought it was going
to be a life of shaking, exhaustion, and depression. With Cytomel, I
gradually became myself again. He also treated me for adrenal exhaustion,
and early menopause, brought on by Hashimoto's. He was always understanding
and was the first doctor that actually believed I was having all the
crazy symptoms I was experiencing. His favorite saying is, "If your
driving down the interstate to see me and get 4 flat tires, which one
do you fix?". He treats the total patient, "not just the lab work".
He also recognizes each patient is different, so his treatment plans
vary according to their particular problems....his ideas and patience
are limitless!!"
Another reader writes:
"After years of searching for a doctor to take me and my symptons serious enough, I was extremely
fortunate to have found Dr. Kerry. I did extensive research to find him (this site as well) and after finally
getting an appt I was so relieved to finally have a Dx. Dr Kerry took more than an hour with me
examining my chart very thoroughly and asking many questions. He was very soft spoken and very
genuine. The staff is great and they are really on top of everything. I would highly recommend a visit
to see Dr. Kerry." (Added 6/05) Hershey
A reader writes: "Dr Roger Levin at Hershey Med Center did top notch
total thyroidectomy on me in April of 98." Hershey
Dr. Melvin J. Horwith, MD & Dr. Rena DeArment MD - Endocrinology
Department
Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, 500 University Drive Hershey,
PA 17033. 717-531-8395. One writer shares with us, "I have Hashimoto’s,
cysts on the thyroid, was given a high dosage of Synthroid, TSH was
off the charts Hyper but I still had all the symptoms of Hypo. After
seeing several doctors in the area I was referred to the Endocrinologists
at Hershey Med. Center. What a pleasant surprise. Dr. DeArment is a
resident working with Dr. Horowith. She was excellent. Very thorough,
took the time to listen, was interested in "how I felt". Both of the
doctors are super. They are open to new therapy (T4/T3). In fact they
brought it up before I did, amazingly enough. Well worth the 1-1/2 hour
drive to travel to Hershey."
Another reader recommends Dr. Horwith:
"What a difference a good doctor makes. Dr Horwith was recommended by
someone on this site. Today was my appointment. Although he does believe
in the numbers he also believes in treating the symptoms. My numbers
were good but my symptoms were no better. He continued my 75mg. of Synthroid
but added Cytomel beginning tomorrow. He listened, made suggestions
and even scheduled a thyroid antibody test for 6 weeks from now. I am
impressed my old endo would not go by anything but numbers. Great Doc!!!
Worth the trip most definitely!!!!" (Added 2/03) Hershey
Dr. Brendan
Stack -- MOVED TO Arkansas Langhorne
Dr. Alan Schorr Endocrinology 380 Middletown Blvd. Suite 710
Langhorne,
PA 19047 215-750-1691 A reader writes: "Dr. Schorr diagnosed and treated
my Grave's disease 11 years ago and has treated me since. He always
takes the time to make sure I feel good, doesn't just rely on test numbers,
seems very up-to-date, explains things well, and he always remembers
something about me that makes me know he does appreciate each patient
as an individual, not just another case. I have complete confidence
in him, and recommended him to my own father, who also goes to him.
(But my stubborn mother won't--still goes to her G.P.--and never is
quite right!)" (Added 11/02)
Another reader writes:
"Where would I start? Dr. Schorr diagnosed my Graves disease in 1990 after
other doctors dismissed
me. He treated me until 1995, when I had to move to another state. At one
point, he brought me
through a very difficult time when I was really sick. I was never so scared, but
when I saw him walk
into the hospital room, I knew everything would be okay. You'll never know
how much I wish I could
still be in Pennsylvania and he could still be my doctor. He knows what he is
doing, and I trust him
implicitly. You are never just a name or a face. You are an individual, with
needs and he knows exactly
what to do. Test result numbers do not always follow the 'norm' and Dr. Schorr
knows this-and treats
his patients accordingly. He listens and he cares. I miss him and his practice
terribly. My health has
suffered since I had to leave his care, too. I would recommend him to anyone,
especially if you are at
your wits end with other doctors you if they simply cannot determine what is
wrong with you." (Added Dec. 04) Langhorne
Thomas Duffield, Family Medicine, St. Mary's hospital, PA, 215-741-1963.
A reader writes: "Dr. Duffield is very sympathetic. He truly listens to his patients and tries to work with
them to treat them. He is open and willing to try new and different things. He actually suggested Armour
Thyroid to me before I had a chance to ask him about it. He has a wonderful, friendly bedside manner,
and always seems like he wants to take the time to see you, which is unusual in our urban area. He's very
good also with my young children, engaging them on their level." (Added 6/05) Lancaster
From a reader: "My doctors Dr. Robert Belser and Dr. David Rosenberg
of Lancaster Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, Throat) with offices in Ephrata
and Lancaster, PA were the best! All the nurses at the hospital told
me I was very lucky to have such skillful surgeons. I had nerves wrapped
around a thyroid nodule that turned out to be cancerous so it was a
very tricky surgery. Their bedside manner and follow-up were great!
Their secretary - a sweet lady - even came to visit me in the hospital!" Manayunk

Educated and treated me with kindness and perseverance. His knowledge

Barbara L. Hoffmann MD, Family Practice/Geriatrics, MedYork, 3 Flowers
Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050, 717-691-1212/ 717-691-5354, blh@medyork.com.
"Dr. Hoffmann has been interested in thyroid disease for many years.
Living in the Three Mile Island area provided ample patients to become
expert in the field. Many patients who are misdiagnosed or are refractory
to treatment seek care at MedYork. Dr. Hoffmann practices alternative
medicine as well as traditional medicine." (Added 6/02).
Another reader recommends Dr. Hoffman:
"She's an expert at troublesome thyroids and she can be your family
doc, too! She does not run a "patient mill". In fact, sometimes I wonder
how she can stay in business! She spends one to two hours with each
patient, listening to how you are feeling. Every "twinge" is a potential
clue, and she doesn't miss any of them. In my case, I went to 2 doctors
who could not figure out what the problem was. One told me it was due
to stress, and this is why I was choking, couldn't swallow, couldn't
breath, and coughed constantly. (let alone the jaw and neck pain). The
next doctor diagnosed asthma, and then got frustrated with ME after
two months of a variety of expensive asthma medications did NOT solve
the problem. I heard by word of mouth that Dr. Hoffmann was GOOD at
thyroid - and she is! She figured out in the first 5 minutes, before
all the tests came back, that I had a goiter growing down into my chest,
pressing on my lungs, throat and pipes. She's also highly intelligent,
a member of MENSA, and she is warm, friendly, compassionate, and a true
pioneer! She seems to get all the patients that no one else can help,
and gets them straightened out very quickly. She is becoming famous
for that in our area! Give her a try!" (added 1/04)
More praise from a reader for Dr. Hoffman:
"I found this Doctor on this Web site, and she has given me my life
back. I went from not being able to get out of bed to working full time
and getting my chores at home done. She was willing to put me on Armour,
and has worked with my temps and other alternatives to booster my health.
The only downside is that she is so great there is always a long wait
in her office. But be patient, the reason for the long wait is that
she hurries no one, she will spend as much time as you need, that is
because she truly cares and talks over everything with you. I know that
recommending her will cause me more of a wait at her office, but I want
to share her with others so they can live with their thyroid disease,
I am just passing it on." (added 1/04)
A reader writes:
"She
is friendly, open, the first doc to really listen to me. Within 15 minutes
of meeting
her, she came to the same conclusions I had...thinking there is thyroid
and something else going on like PCOS or Cushings. She invites you to
look up info to share with her. A first in my experience. I feel she
was an answer to my prayers and look forward to continuing to work with
her." (Added: June 2004) Philadelphia

"I tried to get an appointment with Dr. Goldstein and found my medical
wouldn't approve him. My mother in-law told me about Dr. Evron. He was
voted one of the top 100 in a women's magazine for his field. Apprehensive,
I set up the appointment. I LOVE DR. EVRON!!! He has a nurse practitioner,
Sue who is WONDERFUL. She sits and explains everything to you. Dr. Evron
has a great sense of humor and was the FIRST doctor to not blame everything
on weight/depression. His first comment to me was, "I treat tired women
on a daily basis. It's not all in your mind." If you can't see Dr. Goldstein,
give Dr. Evron a try. I'm definitely glad I met him. Although, be prepared
for lots of blood work/tests. He does a THOROUGH exam, including checking
your kidney function." (Added 11/02)

Suite 301B, Pittsburgh, PA, 412-366-6780. "Dr. Goldstein is located
in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh. I have been hypothyroid since
age 13 -- now in late 50s -- and have not been able to find a medical
doctor who understands how to treat this condition with nutrition and
more natural remedies -- like Armour thyroid -- minerals -- and diet.
I have been taking the wrong medication for years -- and in spite of
complaints of not feeling well -- the doctors I had been seeing insisted
that I was on the proper dosage."
Another reader writes:
"RUN DONT walk to see Dr. Goldstein. I first went to Doc Goldstein 2
years ago after reading this website. 2 other doctors didn’t listen
or believe me. I did not have CFS. I was not depressed- I was SO TIRED!
Dr Goldstein believes me and I feel so much better. Best Wishes and
Call Dr Goldstein!"
A reader adds:
"I am thrilled to recommend Dr David Goldstein as a "Top Doc". He has
helped me so much during the 9 months I have been his patient. He is
kind, humble, patient, and listens to my symptoms and feelings not just
lab values. I had been to many other doctors prior to seeing Dr Goldstein
and got no help at all. Dr Goldstein is an M.D with an holistic approach
to medicine and is not afraid to buck the system by prescribing Armour
thyroid and nutritional supplements when necessary. He has made all
the difference in my health and I can't say enough to express my gratitude."
More praise from a reader for Dr. Goldstein:
"I got Dr. Goldstein's name from this Web site 2 years ago - but it
only took about two months after seeing Dr. Goldstein that I began to
feel so tremendously better. I am thankful to the other people who recommended
him, so I had to add my recommendation as well. My husband invited himself
to one of my appointments with Dr. Goldstein just to thank him and tell
him what a difference he made for me. Don't settle for feeling lousy
with this condition. It's so unnecessary - just find a doctor who will
LISTEN to you and work with you. Dr. Goldstein is such a doctor." (added

Another reader writes:
"Dr. Yim removed half my thyroid due to a nodule that had too great a chance of being cancerous (it was
benign). The blessing in meeting Dr Yim was that he could SEE by looking at it that my thyroid was
failing due to autoimmune process, even though other docs had told me all of my symptoms were not
really happening because my blood tests were normal or nearly normal. Dr. Yim was a breath of fresh
air, and his prediction that my thyroid would continue to fail has turned out to be 100% correct. He did
not mince words--I finally had confirmation and a name for what I'd been dealing with for over 5 years.
No complications from surgery and scar is now hardly visible." (Added 6/05) Pittsburgh

Another recommendation:
"All of the doctors in this group practice holistic medicine. This
is a PATIENT-CENTERED practice; you are given all copies of your recent
medical tests for your own records before you see the doctor. They will
use a thorough panel of tests for the thyroid, not just the TSH. Dr.
Buttram tempers his formidable intellect with kindness, compassion,
and consideration for the patient’s welfare. He will call you personally
with the results of your tests." (Added 4/04)

"He has cured several of my health problems that other
doctors couldn't. He was a wonderful help and supported my decision not to have radioactive Iodine
treatment when I had graves disease. (I also was seeing an endocrinologist during the Graves Disease).
Now that I no longer am hyperthyroid, he treats and prescribes for my thyroid problems. Also, I had a
recurring sinus infection that made me miserable for 20 years. He cured that ! He is a wonderfully kind
older medical doctor. He advises and guides me in all areas of health. He is the all time greatest."

Another fan:
"I found Dr. Schwartz's name on your website as one of the top Docs in my area for thyroid disease
several years ago. I kept complaining to my family Doctor for a long time that I was not feeling better
even with treatment. Dr. Schwartz paid close attention to my symptoms and discovered that I had not
only thyroid symptoms but heart symptoms as well. After insisting that I get a stress test , found that I
had coronary artery disease and was very close to having a heart attack or stroke and I had to have a
triple artery bypass within a couple of days of having the stress test. Dr. Schwartz SAVED MY LIFE!
Thanks to the first person that listed his name on this site. He is the most caring, attentive and competent
Doctor I've ever known. And one of the nicest people you could ever meet." (Added 1/06) State College

Avenue
State College, PA 16803 Phone: (814) 234-8800 www.centremedsurg.com/docs/Dorsey.htm
A reader writes: "When I first saw him I was extremely hyperthyroid
and my levels were off the charts. He was very concerned about thyroid
storm. Sensitive and caring doctor who listens to your fears and concerns.
Explains them clearly so you understand your diagnosis. I would not
want to doctor with another Endo! He's great in my book! thank you Dr.
Dorsey." (Added 6/03)
Another reader recommends Dr. Dorsey:
"Dr Dorsey approaches thyroid disorders as a clinical disease -- not
a lab value. He's much more interested in how I feel than what the blood
work says." (added 1/04)
Another reader writes:
"I first met Dr. Dorsey after a hypothyroid crisis that sent me to bed for a month, with pain all over my
body so bad I could barely walk, eat or even drink water. I was in very poor condition. From the
beginning he cared about how I felt and worked with me to reach a TSH level at which I felt healthy.
It's been four years since my first appointment and I feel great. Now that I'm pregnant he checks my
hormone levels and symptoms constantly to make sure my baby and I are fine. He treats my husband for
Grave's disease too, and he's doing great as well. Dr. Dorsey is a great doctor and I recommend him
for anyone with thyroid problems. Thanks Dr. Dorsey!!" (Added 6/05)
A reader writes:
"I have Graves Disease which on my arrival to his office was very advanced. He's very
easy to talk to and is caring. Will work with you not just what the labs say. I refer all of my friends to
him and they also have been very pleased with the outcome of there visits." (Added Apr 06) State College
From a newsletter subscriber and regular participant on alt.support.thyroid
comes a Top Doc recommendation for Michael P. Flanagan, M.D., located
at Centre Medical Sciences Bldg., 1850 East Park Avenue, Suite 312,
State College, PA 16802, 814-865-7039. Here's our Top Doc nominator's
comments: "I was first impressed because he wasn't offended that I interviewed
him. I asked him if he believed a person with thyroid disease could
be symptomatic while in the normal range, and he agreed. He agreed to
treat me based on my TSH level and symptoms combined. He was open to
trying new meds if they came on the market and is not a Synthroid monger...He
is young (late 30's, early 40) and open to new ideas. He is not an endocrinologist
but then I don't want another one. Within the first two weeks I visited
him he increased my Synthroid back up to .150 because I felt bad and
the three TSH tests prior were on an upward trend. He immediately scheduled
a thorough exam with an endo. The endo wasn't as open and said my meds
shouldn't have been increased, and all my symptoms were real, just not
caused by the thyroid disease. When I told Dr. Flanagan about the 90
minute visit, in which I learned nothing, he shared my disappointment
and verbalized it. He kept me at the .150 anyway. He said he will just
keep testing me and adjusting since my levels won't stabilize and let
the thyroid call the shots. Yea!!!!! Finally!!!! Not only is Dr. Flanagan
outstanding, his nurse is equally supportive. She is a fighter and doesn't
hesitate to come to my defense with other doctors offices. When do you
ever find such a dynamic duo?" University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Farideh Eskandari, endocrinologist, University of Pennsylvania Health
System, 215/829-3060. A reader tells us, "She is very thorough & knowledgeable,
aware of the latest research, & excellent at problem-solving; e.g. Calcium
should not be taken with Synthroid as it interferes with Synthroid’s
absorption. She is also easy to talk with & promptly returns phone calls." Wexvord
Dr. David Goldstein, Holistic Medicine, Brooktree Drive, Wexvord, PA,

feel better than ever. Dr. Goldstein listens. He spent one hour and ten minutes with me on our first
appointment. This man is truly wonderful!" (Added 10/05) Wyomissing
Maria Braun, General Practice, 931 Penn Avenue, Wyomissing, PA 19610,
610-320-9023. A reader writes: "Dr. Braun was my family doctor while
I was being treated by an endocrinologist for Hashimoto's. It became
increasingly clear that my endocrinologist did not have my best interests
at heart. After researching Hashimoto's at length, I knew a different
approach was required. I asked Dr. Braun if she would work with me on
my thyroid condition. I willingly shared my research with her, and after
she reviewed my documents and performed her own independent research,
she agreed treat my thyroid disease. I went from Synthroid to Armour,
then, when tests indicated my Free T3 level was optimal, added enough
Synthroid to optimize my Free T4 as well. I highly recommend Dr. Braun
for being a caring physician with an open mind. She entertains a holistic
approach to medicine that is not only refreshing, but a desirable must
for thyroid treatment." (Added 11/02)
Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
