ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY

The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.

Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.

Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.

Albuquerque

Joseph Lee, MD, Endocrinology/Pathology, 201 Cedar SE, Suite 4630, Albuquerque, NM, 505-563-6400/505-563-6409. "Dr. Lee spent a long time getting a thorough history. He respected my knowledge of hyperthyroidism and was very curious about my use of supplements (I'm a dietitian.). He put me totally at ease (GREAT "bedside" manner!) with regard to my condition and my treatment options. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Lee!!" (added 1/04)

Another reader writes:
"Dr. Lee did a complete medical history. He keeps current on research regarding papillary cancer and treatments for this condition. He talks to you, not down to you." (Added 4/04)

Albuquerque

Ralph J. Luciani D.O., M.S., PhD., M.D.(H) 10601 Lomas NE Albuquerque NM 87112 505-298-5995 http://www.abqclinic.com/. A reader writes, "He listens. He also treats subclinical hypothyroidism by your basal temperature. He is open-minded, if one type of thyroid hormone doesn’t work hell use another, including Armour thyroid hormone."

Another reader recommends Dr. Luciani
"Go to his website and scroll down to "click here for more on these topics" and click on "hypothyroidism." There you will see an article written by Dr. Luciani which details his approach to thyroid disease. Take note of how he says TSH testing is misleading, especially once a patient is on exogenous (oral) thyroid medication. Also notice that Dr. Luciani fully understands you can have completely normal T3, T4, and TSH lab results, and yet still be completely hypothyroid. Dr. Luciani treats the PATIENT, not her lab tests. Dr. Luciani also prefers to use Armour thyroid as opposed to synthetic levothyroxine. In addition, Dr. Luciani recognizes that toxins can prevent thyroid hormone from reaching the cells, leavint the patient with many hypo symptoms even if she has normal labwork. Dr. Luciani focuses on your symptoms, NOT your labwork." (Added 6/03)

Albuquerque

Joseph R. Perea, MD -- NO LONGER LISTED

Santa Fe

Leah Morton OB-Gyn, hormones 401 Botolph Lane Santa Fe, NM 87505 505-983-8387. A reader writes: "Leah Morton listens. She's smart and caring, very meticulous, open to what her patient has to say. She didn't laugh at me when I told her I dowsed a particular supplement; she wanted to know the results! She's attuned to alternative approaches and very conservative about drugs. She's my ideal." (Added 2/03)

NOTE: As of 1/06, this doctor is not taking any new patients.

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.

1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.

Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
