ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.
Derry
Keith Jorgensen Ear Nose Throat Specialist 603- 432-8104 I originally found
this doctor on Dr. Seigal's "Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat" search engine. I have spoken to a patient
of his who takes Synthroid because she prefers it but when talking to his Nurse discovered that he prefers
to prescribe Armour Thyroid. Dover
Sue Taylor, Paul Tung, Monique Manganelli, Endocrinology & Diabetes,
19 Webb Place, Dover, NH 03820, 603-742-1143. "This is such a wonderful practice!! These doctors
really know how to listen to their patients! They are wonderful." (Added 6/02).
A recommendation:
Dr. Monique Manganelli, endocrinologist. This reader writes, "She listens to how I feel, regardless of
my lab numbers."
A reader recommends:
"Dr. Susan Taylor who works at Seacoast Diabetes & Internal Medicine in Dover NH. She has been
wonderful to me!". Dover
Dr. Paul Tung, Endocrinology, 19 Webb Place, NH, 03820, 603-742-1143.
A reader writes: "Dr. Tung takes the time to listen to me and to address me, the person coping with a
chronic condition, and not just the condition. As busy as his entire office is, I never feel rushed or in the
way. I always get treated very well by the entire staff. A very well run office. I wish I had heard of him
much sooner. Absolutely fabulous doctor and staff." (Added 6/05) Hampton
Dr. Daniel Nadeau, Diabetes, Endocrinology & Nutrition, 881 Lafayette
Road, Hampton, NH 03842,
603-926-0896, http://www.FOREVERYDAY.COM. A reader writes: "Dr. Nadeau takes the time to
listen to what you have to say. He wants to know how you are feeling and if you have any concerns that
he can help you with. Dr. Nadeau doesn't rush through his appointments and lets me know if he has any
concerns that I should be aware of." (Added 4/04) Lebanon
Dr. G. Nield Mercer, Endocrinologist, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical
Center, Lebanon, NH. (603) 650 8630. A reader writes, "He is absolutely wonderful. He listens to
everything you have to say and addresses each. He doesn't go by the lab he goes mostly on how you feel.
Today I went and my TSH was .5, he would like it on the lower side of .2 we discussed lowering my
dose of Synthroid and decided that since I was feeling pretty good to wait a month and do another TSH.
We also discussed that if my test comes back still at .5 he will have to lower my dose a notch which I
understood without asking why. When you are in his office with him he acts like he has all day, he is
never in a hurry, which is good for me because I am very forgetful and sometimes it takes me a while
to tell him everything. As far as his office in general the staff is very nice and I have never had to wait
for my appointment."
Lebanon
A reader writes: "May I recommend Dr William Kinlaw at Dartmouth
Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH. Been seeing him for seven years. Very compassionate, no
waiting, takes phone calls, patient, seems to know his stuff...." Londonderry
A reader recommend Daniela Verani, Holistic Family M.D., 182
Rockingham Road, Londonderry NH 03053 Tel. 28603 434-4363. I have not seen her yet but have asked
questions of her nurse. She wants her thyroid patients in the low end of normal TSH range and prescribes
Armour. Also she is able to see me in less than week of request. Londonderry
Dr. John Welter, "He bases his care on the patient. While he usually doesn't
use Armour, he
will use it if asked. He will even use Cytomel for some patients. He is great! He adjusts my dose by free
T3 and free T4 and by how I feel." (Added Dec. 04) Nashua
Dr. Robert Levine Endocrinologist 603- 881-7141 I had been sick for over
a year. Every doctor I went to just kept telling me I had a cold or a sinus infection. Finally I went to
have a thyroid scan done and when we asked a nurse about the best endocrinologist around he suggested
Dr. Levine. I figured I had nothing to lose no one else had any ideas-. Dr. Levine
e immediately noticed that there was a major problem and did a needle biopsy. It was inconclusive but
he continued to search for the source of the problem. He told me that at the very least I'd probably have
to have my thyroid removed and suggested I go see a surgeon to "get started." Meantime I think I met
with him almost every week. When I went to see the surgeon on 1/6/97 he looked down my throat and
I was immediately admitted to respiratory ICU. After more than a year of constantly feeling tired I was
diagnosed with Hodgkins in less than a week. Dr. Levine and Dr. Gaz with his surgical team- quite
literally saved my life. After the surgery Dr. Gaz constantly looked after me visiting sometimes 2 or 3
times a day. He always made sure that I was taken care of including having the other person in my
hospital room moved to another room because she was so loud and constantly screaming for the nurse.
He wanted to make sure I got enough rest so that I would heal and be ready for the chemo sessions that
would come next. If it wasn't for the persistence and GREAT work of both Dr. Levine and Dr. Gaz I
would not be alive today! Nashua
Victor DeVilla, M.D., Endocrinology, Metabolism, Diabetes, 5 Coliseum
Avenue
Nashua, NH 03063, 603-881-7141. "(Partner of other Top Doc, Dr. Levine!) Dr. DeVilla was a godsend
to me. He was caring, actually listened to me and explored many options with me in treating my
hypothyroidism. When I brought him information found in the forums, he went over it with me, and
never copped an attitude about me bringing the info up to him. After 7 months on Levoxyl and not
feeling well, he ordered more comprehensive labs done, and upon my request, allowed me to add 5mcg
Cytomel to see if it will help. I had no problems with him arguing against it- he had more labs done and
saw my Free T4 and Free T3 levels might be helped by it. This isn't a doc who looks at the TSH # and
says "You're normal- my work is done here." He treats me by how I am feeling, because he knows that
MY "normal" TSH is unique to ME- and not a lab's reference range. He & his staff get back to me
quickly when I have a question. I'd definitely recommend Dr. DeVilla if you'd like to try Cytomel,
and/or your current doc isn't listening to how you *feel* but only looking at TSH #'s."
Peterborough
Dr. William Martin, Internist (GP), Monadnock Health Services, Medical
Arts Building, Peterborough, NH. This reader explains, "This is my doctor and he never gave up on me,
he believed me when I told him my symptoms, even though my thyroid test came back okay, he
contacted a specialist, they put their heads together and he continued test to find out that I had a small
tumor on my pituitary gland. I was put on hormone replacement, follow up blood test every month,
change, increases, etc. etc. he is staying right on top of my condition and continues to seek out doctors
that have more knowledge of secondary hypothyroidism. He is a great doctor!"
Portsmouth
Leon Hecht, N.D. holistic Naturopath 500 Market Street, Suite 1F
Portsmouth, NH 03801 (603) 427-6800. A reader shares, "Dr. Hecht cares, listens, is well informed,
very professional, the office is friendly and welcoming. I asked for a trial of cortisol and he gave it to
me, he trusted my judgment about what I needed. He knows thyroid/adrenal issues."
Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
