ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.
Altomonte Springs/Greater Orlando
Dr. Ivan R. Rosado, 661 E. Altomonte Drive, Altomonte Springs, Florida.
(407) 830-1677. A reader tells us, "Dr. Rosado does 5-6 thyroidectomies per week. He sat with hubby
and myself for an hour for the initial visit. He was very thorough in his explanations of all procedures,
risks, alternatives, etc. This included many visuals and written material we could take home and read.
The incision was a hair less than 2". He uses a retractor so it doesn't have to be a wide cut. I have seen
some people with 6-8" cuts after surgery. He told me to use vitamin E so the scar would be less
noticeable. We were given a thorough report of the procedure including the cold nodules, the cyst, and
the huge growth which were all removed. I was given all the information for my medical files without
having to plead for them. Within a few hours of the operation I could speak, had no problem with the
nerves, or parathyroid. This doctor radiates self confidence, yet is warm and patient oriented. A week
after the operation the stitches were removed by his just pulling two thin strings that were outside the
bandage. One little speck of blood on the cotton. No pain at all. The most thorough doctor I have ever
come across. You can just look at his hands and know he is an excellent surgeon. Top notch."
Altamonte Springs
Dr. Scott VanLue -- NO LONGER LISTED , family practice/sports
medicine, 940 Centre Circle, Ste.1010, FL, 32714,
407-862-5637/407-862-8243. A reader writes: "He does not just look at TSH. He listens to your
symptoms and will use T3, compounding pharmacy, nutritional supplements, to help regulate your thyroid
condition. He agrees that most Doctors won't adjust meds if TSH is "normal". He agrees that normal is
0.5-2.0, and that many thryoid meds simply suppress the TSH without alleviating the symptoms. Never
in a rush. Listens to you." (Added 6/05) Boca Raton
Kenneth N. Woliner, MD, ABFP, Holistic Family Practice, 2499 Glades
Road, #106A, Boca Raton, FL 33431. 561-620-7779. A reader describes Dr. Woliner, "Member of the
American Holistic Medical Association and the Institute of Functional Medicine. Also Board Certified
in Family Practice and has admitting privileges at Boca Raton Community Hospital. Provides 1 whole
hour with new patients (one hour with the doctor, not just one hour in the waiting room!)" (Updated
07/03)
A reader writes:
"After four years of misdiagnosis by other doctors, I
went to Dr. Woliner after reading the Shames book. I suspected I had thyroid problems, but Dr. Woliner
quickly ascertained it was andropause. He prescribed a number of natural vitamins and supplement, to
help fight my symptoms and then prescribed male hormone therapy for the cause. His approach is smart
and his demeanor is warm. I drive for hours each way to see him, so you know that's an endorsement."
(Added: Dec. 04)
Note: This doctor took over patients for Dr. Richard Shames (who moved in late spring 2002 to
California. Dr. Shames recommends him personally, and said Dr. Woliner works with natural and
synthetic thyroid, and also has expertise in diabetes and weight management. (Updated
6/02)
(Note from Mary: "I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Woliner in person in November of 2002, when he
attended Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum's seminar on chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I was very
impressed with his commitment to patients, to a holistic approach, and to himself learning as much as
he can about thyroid, adrenal, hormones, CFS, FMS. He's energetic, and appears committed to providing
comprehensive holistic care.") (Added 11/02)
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Woliner subscribes to the head to toe school of medicine. He listens to patients and is not afraid of
requesting labs to rule out unusual problems. He is particularly thorough diagnosing complicated Thyroid
problems and was the only doctor of about 10 I saw that actually diagnosed me correctly. He is
respectful, pleasant and focused. It also appears he continues his study to stay on top of the most recent
medical info available. If you have trouble getting diagnosed, this doctor will go great lengths to find the
trouble." (Added 6/05)
A reader writes:
"He is extremely thorough and proactive with his patients. I like the fact that he is organized and
exceptionally intelligent. He straightened my thyroid issues out within a few months, something my
precious doctor couldn't do or even tried. I would recommend him in a heart beat and have to other
thyroid sufferers." (Added 1/06)
"I found Dr. Woliner via Mary Shomon's note that she'd met him during a seminar on
Dr. Teitelbaum's protocol. Thankfully, I was able to consult with him via phone consult as I live outside
of the US. I was looking for someone to aggressively treat my adrenal problems when thyroid therapy
alone worsened my Fibromyalgia. Dr. Woliner is very open minded about treating hormone imbalance
and believes in tackling the whole problem at once instead of just dealing with one problem at a time.
I am very indebted to him." (Added Apr 06) Boca Raton
Dr. Levenson, endocrinologist, 561 391 4441 Palmetto Park Rd. west of
Powerline Rd. - west of the Shell station, on the north side- call for directions. A reader writes: "He
takes the TIME to listen to you, discuss everything, AND he even calls you AT HOME in the evening
to discuss test results, etc. He's very caring. He's accurate with his diagnosis, is conservative- he doesn't
want you on more medication than you need to be."

Thyroid Surgery - ENT 8189 Jog Rd (also has an office in Wellington) Boynton Beach, Florida 33437
561-734-3636. A reader writes: "Dr. Goldhaber performed a Rt Hemi Thyroidectomy on me in April of
this year. 1st off - I myself am a medical professional so I scrutinize all my docs - for my standards are
probably much higher than some because I look at it all from the "other side". Dr. G did a great job
surgically on me - he will discusses all with you, his game plan to include follow up & Q & A session
- my scar was minimal - looks good w/my help also. Hopefully with the endocrine deity watching over
me I won't have the Lt side removed but if I do he's the man." (Added 11/02)
Another reader writes:
Dr. Goldhaber is one of the most personable doctors I have ever met. I am a crIical of doctors after
working in an open heart unit. Dr. Goldhaber operated on my thYoid on 1/18/05 and found a huge mass.
It is not cancerous, but he took the time to explain to me all my options and gave me enough information
to make an informed choice. The scar is minimal and if I ever needed any kind of surgery again, I would
choose him to do it." (Added 6/05) Boynton Beach

Beach / Boynton Beach.,
Phone: 561-659-6336, A reader writes: "Dr. Gary Pepper listens and takes his time with you. I was not
happy with Synthroid and asked to change to Armour, no problem, very responsive.I highly recommend
him." (Added: Dec. 04)
A reader writes:
"After seeing three endocrinologists who told me I was suffering from depression instead
of the T3 deficiency that it really was I found Dr. Pepper who is compassionate and knowledgeable. He
agreed with and prescribed Cytomel in addition to the Synthroid that I was taking, the addition of which
resolved the mental fogginess and disorientation that I was experiencing." (Added Apr 06) Boynton Beach

Dr. Carol Roberts Holistic Doctor Brandon, Florida 813 661-3662. "Dr.
Roberts is a breath of fresh air! She listens to your concerns, thoroughly explains her treatment focus,
answers your questions, and treats you according to how "YOU" feel, not just how the numbers read.
She treats your whole body , not just the gland under your chin! Prior to meeting Dr. Roberts, I was the
typical thyroid patient who spent years going to endocrinologist who either over-billed my insurance
company for any test they could (but didn't treat my thyroid at all), told me surgery was the only option,
or they filled me up with Synthroid, Glucophage and diet pills! No one would listen to how "I" felt. They
just read the numbers on the lab work and declared me "healed." According to them, if I didn't feel well,
then obviously I needed an antidepressant! Dr. Roberts is simply a wonderful, caring human being. I've
recommended her to a couple of friends/associates and they, like me, are feeling better than they have
in decades!"
Another fan:
Carol Roberts, holistic MD Wellness Works Lakeside Drive Brandon, FL 33510 (813) 661-3662 A reader
writes, "Dr. Roberts will prescribe Armour without any hesitation. She’ll also offer a hair analysis and
blood allergy test and other holistic type treatments. She is not a specialist in thyroid disease, so you need
to judge how you feel yourself. Her prices seem to be about average."
Another fan:
"She treats your symptoms and does not watch the clock while she is talking to you. You will leave her
office feeling like you finally found the right doctor! I drive 120 miles to see her and I would drive
further. I want all my family and friends to go and see her!" (Added 6/02)
Another reader recommends Dr. Roberts:
"After searching one doctor after another to help me with a series of strange symptoms and debilitating
fatigue, Dr. Roberts was recommended to me. She saved my life. She immediately replaced Synthroid
with Armour and worked hard to regulate my thyroid. She is highly compassionate and knowledgeable.
Her belief is to "strengthen the body, focus the mind and lift the spirit." My commute which can
sometimes be over two hours is well worth it." (Added 11/02)

Dr. Erika Bradshaw, Holistic Doctor, Mainstream Meds, 1209 Lakeside
Drive, Brandon, FL 33510 813.661.3662, fax 813.661.0515. "Dr. Bradshaw
is an associate of Dr. Carol Roberts at Wellness Works, whom I found
on your website. I was unable to get an appointment with Dr. Roberts
right away, but was told Dr. Bradshaw was just as good as Dr. Roberts.
On my first visit, Dr. Bradshaw IMMEDIATELY took me off of 4 meds that
my endocrinologist and my internist had me on, off. She put me on Armour
thyroid. This is the BEST I have felt in FIVE YEARS since being diagnosed
with thyroid cancer and hypothyroidism!!! I've been losing weight effortlessly,
have more energy, and people have noticed that I'm almost back to my
"old self" again. She's great!!!" (added 1/04)
Another recommendation:
"She has compassion and patients love her." (Added Dec. 04)
Another reader writes: "I found Dr. Erika Bradshaw listed here after many hours of
research. I KNEW I didn't feel right, yet my doctor insisted I was on the appropriate
dosage for my thyroid. If you have a thyroid condition, are taking meds and still don't feel well; you
came to the right place . Help is on the way! Make an appointment to see Dr. Erika Bradshaw at her
Brandon, Florida office, or at the Palm Harbor location where you will find her 2 days a week. No, you
are NOT supposed to feel as lousy as you do just because you have a thyroid condition. And you don't
have to either! You may say, "But I AM SEEING A DOCTOR! I was too, but I was not well. Listen to
your body. If you know in your heart you don't feel like you should even though you are taking your
meds, you may be on the wrong medication. You will feel like you are in the company of an old friend
with Dr. Bradshaw. She will LISTEN to YOU.... and not expect you to fall into a "cookie cutter" lab
range. I haven't felt this good in 9 years! I forgot what it was like to feel well. Dr. Bradshaw has
introduced me to my "old self", and it's wonderful. I will be eternally grateful to her. You can find the
"old you" again, like I have, when you let Dr. Bradshaw find the right "balance" for your body. Dr.
Erika Bradshaw will help you get there. " (Added: Dec. 04)

hormonal imbalances can affect not only your health buy your life. I visited so many doctors and took
so many unnecessary medications: antidepressants, diuretics, blood pressure and cholesterol drugs just
to name a few. Dr. De Jesus correctly diagnosed me with hypothyroidism and Progesterone/Estrogen
imbalance, I started Armour Thyroid and Bioidentical Hormones and I am a new woman in control of
my life." (Added 6/05)
Another reader recommends Dr. DeJesus:
"She listened to everything I said and told me that she could help and that she and her staff were not just
medical help, but friends. If you feel that something just isn’t right and everyone keeps telling you that
you’re fine, go see Dr. DeJesus and she’ll give you the truth." (Added 10/05) Gainesville
Laurence Kennedy M. D. Endocrinologist University of Florida College
of Medicine Gainesville, Florida 32610-0226 He mentioned that Synthroid
had been the standard for a long time and there had been much about
it in the news recently but he did not put me down for having the info
from this newsletter and was more than willing to do a trial of adding
T3 to the T4 based upon my 20+ years of written history of thyroid diagnosis
treatment and problems. He would not go so far as to put me back on
Armour. But he acknowledged that nature had given us T3 and T4 for a
reason and we should not necessarily have to be stuck with just one.
I was given a trial of Thyrolar 2 for 60 days. Health and numbers improved
but still a little high in the T3. So now I am on generic T4 and Cytomel.
I was interested in the fact that he waited for 2 months to recheck
as previous physicians had only waited two weeks. And yes I got better
slowly. The other day I looked in the mirror and my eyes are no longer
sunken. He was very good at answering my questions and explaining his
reasoning to me. He is going to write to my Family Practice Doc and
explain to him the goals he has as far as my numbers and health are
concerned.
Another reader recommends Dr. Kennedy:
"After years of being told that my thyroid levels were fine, I was fortunate
to schedule an appt. with Dr. Kennedy. He took the time to listen to
my symptoms without quickly brushing them off as "nerves" or other ailments.
He closely reviewed the checklist I had brought with me from this web
site, and asked me questions. Most importantly, he listened to me. He
was pleasant and informative re: thyroid disease, in spite of working
in a busy clinic environment. He increased the medication I have been
taking at the same dosage for 7 years. I am feeling so much better.
I am looking forward to my follow-up visit, as I trust that I am working
with a well-informed and patient doctor." (Added 6/03) Gainesville

wonderful doctor. He spent a very long time with me and explained everything
to me in detail. I’ve never met a doctor who was full of so much information
and willing to explain everything to me in detail. He listened to all
my concerns. He made me very comfortable so it was easy to talk to him.
This is a top doc for sure." (Added 4/04) Hollywood
Dr. Fernando Diaz, endocrinologist. A reader writes: "Dr. Diaz diagnosed
me in 1987, not only was he wonderful, he explained everything to me
and he listened. He was always there when I had a problem."
More praise for Dr. Diaz:
"I highly recommend my endo, Dr.Fernando Diaz. He is very dedicated
and thorough in his diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of his patients.
He listens carefully to what his patients have to say, and answers all
of our questions. While I cannot say with any certainty how specialized
he is with regard to Graves Disease, I do know that he treats a great
many thyroid patients in addition to diabetes patients, so I am sure
he has a good knowledge of Graves Disease. Dr. Diaz is a very good endocrinologist
in the South Florida area, who also happens to specialize in Internal
Medicine & Nuclear Medicine additionally. Here is his contact information/location:

Jacksonville
Fla. 32207. 904-396-5428. A reader writes, "Dr. Miller is a kind, patient
doctor who took all the time I needed to answer my questions concerning
Graves Disease. His office help was very helpful and did not rush me
out of the office after my appointment. Dr. Miller and his entire staff
were reassuring and genuinely concerned about my health."
Another patient writes:
"Dr. Miller is one of the most up to date physicians I have ever known.
I am a retired nurse and I have seen plenty of the good and the bad.
He is a good listener and will always allow your input on what you think
might help your condition. You work together as a team. My income is
small and he helps with my medications by giving me ample free samples
of whatever I am on. His office staff has never had a cross word nor
ever made me and others feel like we are "pestering" them. Dr. Miller
is the very best in my book. His is conservative and only orders test
that are needed. I would give him an A+." (Added 6/02) Jacksonville

Pablo Road, 32224. 904-953-2000. A reader provides this input, "When
my thyroid medication was not working we tried a different kind that
I wanted to try, and he said OK and it works very good." Jacksonville
Dr. John Purcell, endocrinologist, 904-384-2240. A reader writes: "After
suffering with Graves and a hyperactive thyroid for 5 years, I finally
went to see Dr. Purcell. The treatment, compassion, and the time Dr.
Purcell has given me both in his office and away has been quite extraordinary.
I am finally on the correct dosage of Synthroid." Jacksonville
Miguel Roura, MD, Endocrinology, North Florida Endocrinology, 3625
University
Blvd., Jacksonville, FL (904) 448-5500. "I was going to one of the local
endocrinologists after being diagnosed and having surgery for papillary
carcinoma of my thyroid. He kept giving me the same medication and I
kept feeling awful – tired, grumpy, depressed and gaining weight like
crazy!! I finally made the decision on my own to go see someone else
and that someone else was Dr. Roura. After one visit and one set of
lab results he had me on different medications and feeling like new.
He takes time, listens and doesn’t make you feel rushed when you see
him – he is great!!" (added 1/04) Jacksonville
Dr. Ricardo Silva, Endocrinologist, 1820 Barrs Street, Jacksonville,
FL 32204, 904-384-2240. "Dr. Silva encourages you to participate in
your treatment. He does not act like "I am the Doctor and you do as
I say". He always explains why he thinks a treatment is needed and he
never lets you leave his office until he has answered all of your questions.
He also like to have a good laugh with you. He has saved my life."
Another reader writes about Dr. Silva:
"I originally found this doctor on this list and have been to see him
several times. I feel obligated; however, to report that although I
loved Dr. Silva, his office is one of the most inefficient and disorganized
I have ever dealt with. Because of this, I am searching for a new doctor.
So, if this kind of stuff doesn’t bother you, by all means see him.
His partner John Purcell is supposed to be excellent as well."
Update – new phone number & another recommendation:
"This is just an update of his office's phone number (904-384-2240).
Also heard from a good friend that has thyroid cancer that he is wonderful.
She recommended me to Dr. Silva." (added 1/04)
A reader writes:
"Dr. Silva is fine, but I have to agree that the staff are very lacking in
professionalism and courtesy. But Dr. Silva is great! He really knows what he is talking about and is
always
ready to listen to what you have to say." (Added Dec. 04) Jacksonville
Dr. Lorraine Dajani, Endocrinology, 1820 Barrs Street, FL, 32204,
904-384-2240. A reader writes: "After telling many Doctor's for at least 10 years that I did not feel well,
the only one to listen and find my problem was Dr. Dajani. Not only did I have a low thyroid, but I had
many thyroid nodules as well. She is very caring and compassionate. Her staff was very caring as well.
I feel sure that I will now be on the road to recovery. I highly recomend her as a very caring and
competent Endocrinoligist for anyone seeking a Doctor to care for their thyroid or diabetes needs."

J. Sample Magee, M.D., Endocrinology, Diabetes And Metabolism, 580
W. 8th Street, Suite 6005, FL, 32209, (904) 244-9600. A reader writes: "I had just been diagnosed with
hyperthyroidism and told I needed to seen an endocrinologist. Doctor Magee came highly recommended
by not only other doctors, but people in Jacksonville who have diabetes, thyroid problems, and other
problems with the endocrine system. My first dealings were with his staff, and his staff is top notch. I
can't say enough good things. They were able to schedule a thyroid scan for me immediately and worked
hard to provide me with an appointment to see Doctor Magee right away. I asked to be put on a
cancellation list since I work only 5 mnutes from his office, and, to their credit, I was put on that list and
called in for an earlier appointment than originally scheduled. Doctor Magee was wonderful. He took
time to explain my thyroid scan results, my lab results, that I have Graves' Disease and what my
treatment options are. He spent an entire hour with me. He is not the type of doctor who says "this is
what we're going to do." It's a decision the patient and doctor makes together. I go back in 6 weeks to
discuss the options he gave me and formulate a game plan. I've never felt so comfortable with a doctor
or his staff." (Added 6/05) Jupiter
Dr. Gary Pepper Endocrinologist Palm Beach Diabetes and Endocrine
Specialists.
"He has worked with me 5 years now. He has been willing to change my
dose of Levoxyl/Cytomel per my needs and was willing to prescribe Armour
per my request. We have built a good relationship and I trust him to
treat me properly. I started on Synthroid, felt better, however my doses
increased regularly. Then when the dose topped out I started feeling
very tired between meals. That's when he suggested Cytomel, thank god!
It worked very well, however proper dosage was critical. I then asked
for and got a scrip for Armour. I think Gary Pepper listens well and
spends the proper amount of time with me." Jupiter

when their TSH is above 2.0. He treats it appropriately. He is very intelligent, has a good personality,
and is a good listener. He respects his patients understanding of their own condition and works with them
to improve their health." (Added 6/05) Lake Mary

I have been to many doctors in the past 20 years and she was the first
one to tell me I needed to take my medicine alone for it to be effective.
She changed the medicine to Unithroid and increased my dose. I feel
much better. She takes her time with you and is truly concerned about
her patients." (added 1/04)
Another recommendation:
"Dr. Ansara is the best. She is very sympathetic about your symptoms
and does her best to find the right medication that will work for you.
She also put me on Unithroid and it works better for me than Synthroid
did." (Added 4/04)

understanding and willingness to try things out of the mainstream. He doesn't take insurance but his fees
are reasonable. He is a regular doctor but leans toward the holistic and will prescribe Armour without
a fight. He makes me feel like I know my body and condition best and treats by how I feel rather than
just by the numbers. A better doctor is not to be found in central Florida." (Added: Dec. 04) Largo

"I had originally found Dr. Lupo from this list and he was an absolute Godsend!! My three year old son
was newly diagnosed hypothyroid. The pediatrician we were seeing told me that he had ADHD and
needed to be on Ritalin, even when we got a TSH reading of 7.5. She actually asked me if he had been
tested for Mono!! That is when I started to do my own research and found this site- Thank you Mary for
a truly lifesaving service! After having to battle the pediatrician to actually admit the thyroid issue, we
were told that he could not get in to see a pediatric endocrinologist for 9 months!! I was absolutely beside
myself! That is when I found Dr Lupo's name on this list. I called crying that my son needed help and
do they know of any pediatric endocrinologists that they would recommend that could possibly see him
sooner. The receptionist asked me what his TSH was and then said "how about you come to see Dr Lupo
on Thursday?" It was a Tuesday! I almost fell to the floor in gratitude and relief. Dr Lupo is not a
pediatric endocrinologist as a rule but we could not have been in better hands. He immediately started
my son on synthroid and went through the lab results bit by bit with kindness and patience. Every time
I had a question or concern it was always met with honest concern and knowledgeable answers. He truly
cares about his patients and how they feel, not just what the numbers say. So it is no surprise that when
I recently received a TSH reading of 15.99 for myself there was no question what doctor I was going to
see!! He is absolutely committed to bettering his patients lives. He really listens to you and does not
treatby the "numbers" of your test results. He is very thorough and addresses all of the issues-not just
the
standard tests. I also suffer from Fibromyalgia which he addressed and is hoping that if we get me down

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
