ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.

Bloomfield
Dr. Lori Fritts, Endocrine Surgery, 3 Northwestern Drive, Bloomfield, CT,
960-726-1414. A reader writes: "I am so happy that I found Dr. Fritts. I have never had a Doctor make
me feel so comfortable. Dr. Fritts was warm, caring, allowed me to bring in as many people as I wanted
to discuss my condition. She took the time to answer all my questions, drew diagrams and made the
whole process of having my thyroid removed easier than i had originally anticipated. Her post op care
has been wonderful. She was
very concerned about how i would feel about my scar and she went above and beyond to have it make
it blend in with the creases in my neck. Her receptionist is also a very patient and kind." (Added
4/04)
A reader writes:
"Dr. Fritts has the most amazing bedside manner, now matter how busy she is she
makes you feel as if you are the most important person there is. She did a sub-total thyroidectomy on me
in June of 2005. She avails herself all hours of the day and night as well as weekends. My hormones
were so out of whack for a while after surgery and she was always there to "talk me off the ledge" so
to speak. I refer many people to her she is AMAZING!!!!" (Added Apr 06)
Bloomfield
Dr. Joel Miller, MD, PC, Endocrinology, Metabolism, Internal Medicine,
6 Northwestern Drive, Suite 303, Bloomfield, CT 06002, 860-242-6633, Fax: 860-286-8411, "After
having been through several area Endocrinologists during the pervious
decade, Dr. Miller has been the only one who has successfully treated my Grave's Disease, euthyroid
condition and symptoms. During my first visit, he immediately took me off Armour and placed me on
Thyrolar. Although I was reluctant, his explanation was informed and made a world of sense to me.
After a month on Thyrolar, I effortlessly lost 15 pounds. The next time I saw Dr. Miller was the first
time,
since I became hypothyroid, following RAI, that a doctor has even mentioned, let alone
addressed the issue of still having Grave's Disease. He was able to determine this based on my
symptoms and how I responded to the Thyrolar. He explained to me that, rather than trying to have my
thyroid
levels at a 'normal' range, that he was increasing my dose in order to force me into remission. After a
certain time period he ordered blood work to test for Grave's antibodies, and there were none
present." (Added Dec. 04)

him to quickly zero in on an autoimmune form of hypothyroidism called
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. This condition had been missed by several other
physicians. His exceptional treatment balanced with a kind and compassionate
manner has significantly enhanced my quality of life. He is also well
educated in alternative medicine and practices with Susan L. Marra,

being when you go to him; He listens to everything you have to say and takes time to answer all your
questions. I also like that he takes the blood tests himself and you don't have to go t o a lab. The best
thing I love about him is he takes the time out of his busy schedule to call me personally to give me my
test results. Other doctors have someone else call you. He treats every patient like they are special not
just a number. When he sees you he knows your name. I have had a lot of problems with my thyroid and
Dr Rosa always knows what to do for me. He will always fit me into his office when I get sick with some
weird symptoms. I refer everyone I speak to who has thyroid problems to him because I think he is the
best ever...." (Added 11/02)

here in CT did not treat my condition properly and I became very hypothyroid. I found Dr. Patten
through your website as one of her associates was recommended but she is receiving the new patients.
Lucky day for me. She has prescribed the treatment recommended in your book, which is also the
treatment I feel is correct, she is very smart and personable. She has given me the best care I have gotten
in Ct. and I am very happy to have her as my doctor."

Dr. Robert Lang, Endocrinology -- NO LONGER LISTED
Middletown
A reader writes: "The doctor that I found was recommended to me by my
aunt. Dr Germaine in Middletown, CT is a certified naturopath and she
is a superb. Looking at your web site, I see many of the issues that
she and I are working on together -- zone type eating, adequate rest,
adding exercise, building up my immune system particularly with the
use of essential fats, use of Armour thyroid instead of Synthroid, you
name it. She listens and works with you as a whole person, not just
a thyroid gland. I would recommend her to anyone. I pay for her out
of my own pocket as insurance doesn't cover the cost. But my health
is worth it. I do believe that some insurances pay for this type of
coverage...I hope this helps you or whoever needs this information.
Dr Jacqueline Germaine, her number is 860- 347-8600 there will be a
taped message first, and then a receptionist will answer."

listens. I complained to various doctors, including some well-known
endos, for over 4 years but always got told well your test results are
normal so there's nothing wrong with you. When I first went to see Dr.
Wolinsky, she said yes your test results are in the normal range but
you have many of the clinical symptoms of low thyroid. She prescribed
Armour and also found that my adrenals were not working properly. She
prefers using the most natural method but will not rule out using drugs
if nothing else seems to work. She is also willing to use supplements
if appropriate. Since seeing her, I actually feel warm for the first
time in my life! I was one of those people who only felt good when my
TSH was less than 1. She is comfortable using both conventional and
alternative methods, whichever will work best for you. Her office does
not participate in any insurance plans, but to me, my health is well
worth the fee and I can still use my health plan's out of network benefits
after I have met the deductible. Her willingness to try and get to the
bottom of the problems and get my body working as good as possible is
worth the expense."
Torrington
Dr. Eglis Bogdonovics, Endocrinology / Diabetes, 780 Litchfield Street,
Torrington, CT 06790, 860-496-2198. A reader writes: "I had many symptoms of Hashimotos for a long
time and went to several doctors looking for an answer. The other doctors just ordered a TSH test and
said it was "normal" . Dr. B. gave me a thorough
evaluation and ordered a panel of tests, including antibodies. No other doctor had ever checked that
before. Dr. B. is easy to talk to. When I saw him I was feeling very discouraged and embarrassed that
my hair was falling out . Dr. B.'s manner set me at ease. Doctor B. prescribed the medication I need and
I am feeling good for the first time in a very long time. I am getting good follow up care too." (Added
1/06)

Dr. Juan Fica, Endocrinologist, 1389 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT
06708, 203-753-9313. "I have been seeing Dr. Fica since 1990. I started
seeing him after having a total thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer
(I was under another endocrinologist's care at the time). He has carefully
monitored my health and discovered when I had a recurrent tumor and
it was successfully removed. It has been six plus years since then.
Dr. Fica has certainly taken good care of me and I agree that he is
very caring and supportive."
Another recommendation: "In 1990, Fica treated me for Graves
Disease. Unlike other doctors who would use the radioactive iodine as
the first treatment, he used antithyroid drugs. He is warm, knowledgeable
and bright." (Added 4/04)
West Hartford
Dr. Frank Aieta, N.D., Naturopathic Medicine, 301 North Main Street, CT,
06117, 860-232-9662
A reader writes: "Dr. Aieta diagnosed me with hypothyroidism after numerous specialist said there was
nothing wrong with me. They told me that based on the blood work my thyroid was normal, yet I was
experiencing all the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism that I read about. Dr. Aieta treated me with
herbs, nutrients and natural thyroid support and within a month all of my symptoms had subsided.
Apparently I was very deficient in the proper nutrients that the body needed for active thyroid hormone
to be produced. He said that I was not converting T4 the inactive thyroid hormone over to T3 which is
the active form. I was very surprised that no other doctor that I went to was aware of this." (Added
6/05)

all of my problems."
Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
