ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.
Aurora
Dr. Robert Rees-Jones, Endocrinology & Diabetology, 1550 S Potomac St
#260, Aurora, CO 80012, 303-369-9445. "Dr. Robert Rees-Jones is awesome! He was very receptive
to my wanting to try T3, in addition to T4. It took me a few months to get a first appointment, but it was
definitely worth the wait! He prescribed Cytomel, along with my Levoxyl and I've never felt better! He's
also a pleasure to talk to, actually listens to me!"
Another recommendation:
"I have been very ill since having papillary thyroid cancer. Dr. Rees-Jones is the first endo in the Denver
Metro Area (I have been to many) to actually listen to my concerns and problems. He and his whole staff
participate in healing the whole person rather than just the thyroid. He has referred me to a number of
other excellent doctors. For the first time in 7 years I am finally recovering." (Added 6/02).
Another patient:
"Very knowledgeable and compassionate. Harvard educated with a homeopathic approach." (Added 6/02).
Another reader recommends Dr. Rees-Jones:
"A "top Doc" because he listens. After 45 years of battling doctors across the nation just to have them
listen to me... Dr Rees-Jones did. I really feel that at age 55, I might finally get equilibrated and get on
with my life. Thank you Dr Rees-Jones." (Added 11/02)
Another reader writes:
"I started seeing Dr. Rees-Jones in 11/02. I had gone through quite a few previous doctors in Denver
who were horrible. Finally, I feel with Dr. Rees-Jones that I have found someone who understands and
listens. He is the most knowledgeable doctor I have ever seen. I truly trust this doctor and he and his staff
have been wonderful. Had to go through a lot of toads to find this prince. He is a top doc!" (Added 2/03)
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Rees-Jones listens to how the patient is feeling. I have Graves' Disease and he was the only doctor
willing to discuss options and involve me, the patient, in the treatment decision. He carefully monitors
levels and adjusts medicine according to BOTH how the patient feels and the thyroid levels. He details
your condition/progress and involves you in your healing. You couldn't find a better doctor in the U.S.
in my opinion - knowledgeable, caring, and willing to go the distance to see his patients fully recover."
(Added 6/03)
More praise from a reader for Dr. Rees-Jones:
"I found Dr. Rees-Jones via this website. He and his staff probably saved my sanity and my marriage.
I have Hashimoto's disease (the rare one that is first over active) and no other doc would treat me as my
thyroid function declined. I grabbed the first appointment available with his nurse practioner. Do that to
get your foot in the door. It was a 2 month wait. They did blood work and voila! I'm on meds and
feeling immediate relief. Other docs just wanted to put me on anti-depressants and cholesterol meds to
treat the symptoms, not the disease. Bravo for this doctor and his staff!!" (added 1/04)
Yet another reader recommends Dr. Rees-Jones:
"Dr. Rees-Jones really takes the time to listen! After years of being told my TSH blood test now indicated
my thyroid was now "normal" why didn't I feel normal? I asked this question to Dr. Rees-Jones and he
answered by sitting down with me and going over my symptoms and discussing treatment options. We
have experimented with several different T/3 and T/4 combinations and for the first time since I have
been dealing with hypothyroidism, I feel there is hope! He really involves the patient in the whole
process! For the first time in my life, I don't feel like I'm on the outside looking in at my thyroid
problems! Dr. Rees-Jones is a breath of fresh air!" (added 1/04)
Another recommendation
"He is a really nice guy who sits down and explains the situation to you as much as you need." (Added
4/04)
Another fan of Dr. Rees-Jones:
"I have been to many doctors that have told me that my TSH levels were in the ‘normal’ range for
years. But I haven’t felt right. Once I saw Dr. Rees-Jones, I knew that he was going to help me and
he did. I have never felt better. He kept my synthroid the same as I have been taking and added T3,
which no other doctor wanted to do. Dr. Rees-Jones and his staff are kind, helpful and full of knowledge.
I highly recommend that if you are I need of a doctor to listen, you should see Dr. Rees-Jones." (Added
10/05)
Another recommendation:
Dr. Rees-Jones is amazing. He truly understands what the thyroid patient needs are and how much they
have experienced in the past with misdiagnosis and medication changes. After 12 different medication
changes over four years, Dr. Rees-Jones understood my frustration. The doctor reassured me that his top
priority was "getting me well" and then we could worry about the weight gain. He told me to be patient
as this may take some time...up to a year. I was so very impressed with this doctor. I will be seeing him
every seven weeks for several months and I look forward to feeling better. His staff is also phenomenal.
Dr. Rees-Jones is easy to talk to and explains his course of action." (Added 1/06)
A reader writes:
"Since 2001, I've seen and left more Endocrinologists than I care to talk about. Dr.
Rees-Jones and his staff listen, learn, meet and discuss the case, work w/you as a "real" person and not
a number...they asked for 1 year to adjust my situation. It took approximately that long to adjust, but not
to feel better. They have a very realistic approach that has your health/welfare in mind from the first
appointment." (Added Apr 06)
NOTE: Dr. Rees-Jones’ popularity results in wait to get an appointment: Several patients
have noted that it takes a long time to get an appointment with Dr. Rees-Jones due to his popularity and
current patient load. Expect about a two month wait -- Mary (added 1/04)

we specialize in disorders of hypo-metabolism underlain by hypothyroidism or thyroid hormone
resistance. We both have co-treating medical physicians on our treatment team who prescribe according
to our recommendations. We are the primary doctors, however, managing all cases. Our practices are

A fan writes:
I have tried to find a doctor for over 20 years who could treat me for thyroid problems. This doctor
works with you and stays with you communicating frequently. She has done so much for my condition.
I highly recommend this doctor.
A reader writes:
"I recommend Dr. Lowe highly! After reading some of Dr. Lowe's writing and
reading the website he has with his wife and partner, Dr. Gina Lowe, I decided to try a phone
consultation. I typed a short, one-page medical history and faxed it along with my latest blood test results.
It was easy to set us a phone consultation appointment within a week of calling. I spoke with Dr.
Lowe for almost an hour. He shared as much information with me as he could during this period. It was
the most informative time I have ever spent with a medical doctor so far. I generated four pages of notes
that I have referred back to several times." (Added Dec. 04)
A patient writes:
"Dr. Honeyman-Lowe & Dr. John C. Lowe are amazing! I Came
from PA to Boulder to see them and they far exceeded my expectations. They spend time , listen, utilize
tests that the majority of Drs. don't. I can't say enough about them! When I arrived I had pain and every
other symptom from Fibromyalgia. They were so compassionate. Within a couple of months after that
visit, via phone, we had transformed my condition from 95% pain and lethargy to 10% if that. They are
not afraid to think outside of the box. Kudos to these doctors! They are worth every penny to travel to
see." (Added: Dec. 04)
Boulder
Dr. Mary Shackelton Naturopathic Physician, Flatirons Health Center, 2975
Valmont Rd # 100, Boulder, CO 80302 303.448-9098. A reader writes that Dr. Shackelton, "has
excellent alternative practices to treat the cause as well as the condition. Is well acquainted with all
aspects, is knowledgeable and will listen to the problem rather than just give out another prescription."
Another reader recommends Dr. Shackelton:
"She will work with you to treat your specific thyroid condition. She also specializes in the treatment of
insulin resistance, polycystic ovarian syndrome and diabetes." (added 1/04)

fibromyalgia and thyroid expert John Lowe, DC, as well as Rudi Ballentine, MD.
ohearnejs@aol.com
Another fan:
"Dr. John O'Hearne's presence and practice in Boulder is one of the great blessings and serendipitous
events in my life. My wife and I moved to Colorado in 1991, from the New York City area, where Dr.
O'Hearne was our physician at the East-West Medical Institute. Under his care, we had never felt
healthier or happier with the overall scope of our health care." (Added: Dec. 04)
A patient writes:
"Dr.
O'Hearne is a caring , interested Doctor. Interested in every aspect of your health, not just the problem
at hand. I was introduced to Dr. O'Hearne through Drs. Honeyman-Lowe & Dr. John C. Lowe so we
could coordinate my treatment for Fibromyalgia. He has been amazing to work with! Open minded and
caring and available by phone. I live in PA and sought treatment in Boulder because I had read about
these Doctors. Dr. O'Hearne is the first medical doctor that actually listened to me. Thanks to him I am
feeling great and as I said I do have Fibromyalgia! Thanks Dr. O'Hearne for your compassion." (Added:
Dec. 04)
Note: His original training in holistic/integrative medicine was with Rudi Ballentine, MD (author of
"Radical Healing", "Diet & Nutrition" etc) in 1985-87 in the 2000 hr physician training program at the

Boulder
John Campbell P.A., general medicine; knows a lot about thyroid, 2880
Folsom, Suite 212, CO, 80304, 303.247.9696. A reader writes: "John Campbell is much better than his
P.A. title would suggest. He understands why T3/T4 therapy is necessary with some patients. He
understands how to treat anxiety and insomnia caused by hypothyroidism. He is better at thyroid
treatment than three M.D.s (one an endo) I tried."
(Added 6/05)
Boulder
Dr. Kamath, Endocrinology, Boulder Medical Center, Boulder Colorado,
303-444-4441. A reader writes: "
I had 3 miscarriages before being diagnosed with Graves Disease, I was told to see this Dr. that she
specialized in thyroid conditions with pregnant women. She monitored me very closely and kept only the
dosages I absolutely needed and not any more because of the baby. I am high risk anyway because of my
age (39) I am proud to announce that my daughter born May 2005 is healthy and has been tested for
thyroid problems and so far she has none. This doctor listens to you and takes the time you need, she
will call you after hours or on a weekend just to check up on you. I highly recommend this doctor."

is willing to prescribe Armour"
Another reader recommends Dr. Juetersonke:
"He is what you call a third line doctor. He specializes in treating the very people that doctors give up
on. He let me pick what I wanted to do. He prescribes T4 and T3 combo drugs and he also prescribes
Armour."
Another reader writes:
"He listens to you, believes you and takes your symptoms seriously. Knowledgeably prescribes T4 and
T3 . Finally someone who respected how one can suffer with hypo symptoms. Well worth the trip from
the Denver area. The office visit and the treatments prescribed were affordable." (Added 11/02)
A reader writes:
"I had gone unsuccessfully from doctor to doctor for 15 years suffering from depression and chronic
fatigue syndrome which was resulting in large part from low thyroid levels. Dr. Juetersonke is on the
forefront of modern medicine and worked with me to come up with solutions to my problems. He also
prescribed both T4 and T3 to control my thyroid levels. I have been seeing him for two years now and
feel better than I have in 20 years!" (Added 10/05)

Denver
Dr. Kendall Gerdes, Environmental, 2 Steele St., # 200 Denver CO
80206-5708 ph 303-377-8837. Writes one reader, "I was fortunate to find this wonderful doctor after 2
years of taking Synthroid during which my symptoms never went away. He really listens and has changed
my life!"
Denver
A reader writes in to tell us that there is a chronic fatigue syndrome clinic
at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Illness. The doctor who specializes in the
chronic fatigue is Dr. Jim Jones. He also deals with patients with fibromyalgia, as do some of the other
physicians on the team. Their specialty is not endocrinology per se, but given that they specialize in
autoimmune diseases of various sorts, they also see people with Graves and Hashimoto's, given they are
also autoimmune. They can refer to other endocrinologists in the Denver area.
Denver
"I went to Dr. Howard Kerstein 4545 East 9th 320-2888, he was
wonderful!!! I had eye surgery done by Dr. Eugene Wiggs 2005 Franklin St 863-0011."
Another reader recommends Dr. Kerstein:
Howard Kerstein Endocrinology 3865 Cherry Creek N Dr, Ste 322 Denver, CO 80209 / 3865 Cherry
Creek N. Dr, #322, Denver, CO 80209, 303-394-2888. A reader writes: "My other doctor only ever
checked my TSH and said she was "at a loss" when I didn't feel better after months of Synthroid. Dr.
Kerstein listened very well and suggested we try adding T3 since I have not felt better on T4 alone. He
said it was up to me whether I wanted to add Cytomel to my Synthroid or go with Armour, explaining
the pros and cons. Dr. Kerstein ordered a bunch of tests to find out the cause. He seems a very kind and
competent person." (Added 4/03)
Another fan:
Rarely can a patient locate a doctor that will give you a personal call with any xray or blood test results.
Dr Kerstein is a genuine exception. He will listen to you and work with you. He cares about his patients,
plain and simple. If necessary he will prescribe T3 which is a rarity in its self. Great Doc and I
recommend him to anyone that is looking for answers to a better lifestyle. (Added 1/06)
Denver
Dr. Mervyn Lifschitz, Endocrinologist and Internist, 4545 E. 9th Avenue,
Suite 310, Denver, CO 80220, 303-388-4673. "Dr. Lifschitz actually listened to my horror stories about
the numerous endocrinologists I have seen. He spent over an hour with me. It was the most thorough
exam I have EVER had for my thyroid disorder. It turns out that I may have an adrenal problem, which
has caused all of the other problems. He actually looked at the type of and location of the fat I have on
my body. After 5 purple tops (test tubes for blood) I felt totally sure that he would not miss anything in
my blood! He called immediately upon receiving my lab results (what a novel concept, I usually call the
Dr. to ask if they have any results yet) to schedule more tests. He is requesting a CAT scan of my
adrenals (first time for that) and an ultrasound of my ovaries. If you have ever wondered where all the
GREAT doctors have gone, the answer is I found one!" (Added 6/02).
A reader writes:
"Everything the previous reader said was true. Dr. Lifschitz did a complete physical
exam, along with taking the time to listen to me & write everything down. After running quite a few xray
& lab tests, he personally called me to tell me the results & answered all of my questions. He also
considers how the patient feels & not just the test result numbers. While I was initially a little unsure of
how this experience would be (the office doesn't have a fax, they insist on a referral even when your
medical plan doesn't require one, & they require documentation of past tests prior to seeing you), it was
well worth the little extra effort it took to get in. This office is truly run on old-fashioned service ethics
& they care about the patient. " (Added: Dec. 04)
Denver
Dr. Philip Neff, Surgeon, 8550 West 38th Avenue #308, Wheat Ridge, CO
80033 (303) 425-2808. One reader says that, "This surgeon was wonderful. He is very compassionate,
really takes to time to explain everything in great detail to you. A wonderful bedside manner. He has
performed breast lump needle biopsies on me as well as removal of my thyroid. He not only helped me
understand the surgery and treatments and did a great job on the surgery, but he was very emotionally
supportive."
Denver
Dr. Steven Osa, Endocrinology/Diabetes, 950 East Harvard Ave. Suite 650,
CO, 80210, 303-722-4683/303-778-0726. A reader writes: "Dr. Osa has been ranked as one of
Colorado's Top Endocrinologists. He is the most personable doctor I have ever met and one who truly
cares. My first session with him involved an informational session about my thyroid disease, my
concerns, and how he would treat me. I was thoroughly impressed and still am today. I would not trust
anyone else with my thyroid!" (Added 6/05)
Denver
Dr. Alissa Gadacz, ND, Naturopathic Physician, 549 E. 19th Ave, Denver,
CO 80203, 303-917-4470. A reader writes: "Dr. Gadacz is familiar with how the thyroid functions and
how it affects everything in your body. I have had incredible success with her treatments and am so
happy with the results!" (Added 10/05)
Englewood
Linda Davis Internist Front Range Internal Medicine 499 E Hampden Av
Ste 400 Englewood CO 80110 303- 788-1620 I switched to this doctor when I had a change in insurance
-- she was highly recommended by my cousin who has been a nurse for over 20 years . I had just started
on Synthroid with my previous doctor. Dr Davis answered my questions and changed my dosage slightly
after doing the appropriate tests. I have been on that dosage now for at least two years. When the New
England Journal of Medicine article came out I asked her about it and she said that she would ask the two
endocrinologists she knew and would get back to me. She called a few days later. We discussed what they
had to say about it and decided not to do anything with it for the time being. In August of 2001 I made
an appointment to reevaluate my thyroid its levels. I had lost 70 lbs on a ketosis diet but did not feel any
extra energy and was sleeping erratically. During my appointment we discussed Armour although Dr.
Davis said that she is concerned about the lack of consistency available from this I did not get the feeling
that if I wanted to try it that she would not agree- and we also talked about getting my TSH down into
the 1-2 range my last one was 4.5-. She also asked a lot of questions about my lifestyle -- stress levels.
We discussed a number of choices I would have after the test results came back so when her nurse called
me I knew what was next. In this most recent appointment I asked her how many patients she has seen
with thyroid problems and she said "hundreds". I am recommending her due to her general handling of
all my health care issues. She listened to my thoughts and concerns but also incorporated a larger view
of what might be causing my symptoms as well as temporary and long term solutions for both. Also in
other instances where I needed more immediate care and she was not available I have been seen by three
other doctors at this practice. I received excellent care from each of them as well.
Englewood
Dr. Floyd Russak, Family Practice, 8200 E. Belleview, Englewood, CO
80111, 303-694-5757, www.east-westhealth.com. A reader writes: "Has been my thyroid physician for
the last 8 years. Has been a God-send and also works with women going through menopause like me,
which can be tricky with thyroid illness. He is a true healer, not a drug-dealer type of Dr. and the other
physicians and acupuncturists are top, too." (Added 1/06)
Fort Collins
Patti Caputto, C.N., Certified nutritionist, 519 W. Mountain Ave., Fort
Collins. 970.224.5521. "If you are frustrated in your search for effective treatment, see Patti," writes one
reader. "She has extensive knowledge of thyroid function and dysfunction, as well as a comprehensive
grasp of women's health issues and how they may interact with the thyroid and other glands. Patti uses
Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA), a kind of muscle testing, to work with the body's intelligence to
determine what the body needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. If Patti determines that a
prescription will help, she works closely with several medical doctors. Patti also can determine which
thyroid medication will be most beneficial, whether it's Armour, Synthroid, Thyrolar, etc. She offers a
lot of support in conjunction with conventional treatment, including raw glandulars and a variety of
nutritional supplements."
More about Patti Caputto:
"Patti is compassionate and listens closely to your needs and goes out of her way to take care of them.
She is skilled, very experienced and takes the time to do a good job. She recommends supplements to
help your body build itself up. I am much stronger and healthier since seeing her. She works closely with
an MD in Fort Collins. I highly recommend Patti."
Another reader writes:
"We consider Pati our family healthcare provider. She cares. She listens. She knows how to get to the

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
