ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY
The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.
Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.
Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.
Albany
Dr. Marcey Shapiro, Wholistic Family Medicine, 1152 Solano Ave,
Albany,
CA 94706, 510-525-2200. http://www.marceyshapiro-md.com. A reader writes: "Marcey Shapiro
uses herbs, acupuncture and nutrition as well as medications including Armour. She is willing to
do whatever labwork is necessary. Her manner is warm and personable, and she is a good listener.
She does
not accept insurance, so the initial appointment is expensive, but then that allows her to spend
a long time with you doing a thorough intake." (Added: June 2004) Anaheim
Bruce Chow, OD General Practice 9581 Ball Road Anaheim CA 92804
A reader
writes: "Dr. Chow is open to patient feedback, will call you personally
with lab results, very caring and understanding, not in a hurry with
patients. He will prescribe Armour and believes that just because a
drug is newer, it's not necessarily better--he depends on patient input
to decide if a medicine is appropriate or not." (Added 6/03) Apple Valley
Stephen M. Damiani, DO, FAAIM, FACE, Internal Medicine and
Endocrinology, 18092 Wika Rd. Hwy 18, Suite 110
Apple Valley, CA 82307, 760-946-3366, Fax: 760-946-3866 "I finally found a doctor that knew the right
tests to give me and he found that I
had Hashimotos and is treating me with Armour natural thyroid (Synthroid did not work for me). He
always keeps on top of my health problems and concerns." (Added Dec. 04)
Another
reader recommends Dr. Damiani:
"This doctor is a true specialist. He knows what tests to do and knows his profession. Most of all, he
treats his patients with dignity and respect and takes all the time you need. Highly recommended!"
(Added 10/05)
Another fan of Dr. Damiani: "Very caring and knows how
to treat a thyroid problem." (Added 10/05)
More praise for Dr.
Damiani: "I went to Dr. Damiani a few months ago after fighting with my HMO doctors for
four years. I had an enlarged thyroid and mass in my neck that made swallowing difficult amongst other
problems. Dr. Damiani immediately sent me to have an ultrasound and a CAT scan. To make a long
story short, three weeks ago I had a rather large mass and thyroid removed and am beginning to feel
better. Dr. Damiani continues to monitor me with blood work and medication. I am very happy to have
at least found a doctor who is concerned about his patients!" (Added 10/05)
A reader
writes: "I have been sick for 14 months and seen over 20 docs and received no help at all!
I wasn't until I was told about Dr. Damiani that I was able to finally receive the help and tests I needed.
He is a wonderful doctor, who makes me feel comfortable whenever I am around him." (Added Apr

David Freeman M.D. -- NO LONGER LISTED (Deceased, early 2006)
Berkeley
Dr. Stephen Langer, General Preventive Medicine & Clinical Nutrition,
3031 Telegraph Ave. 548-7384 A reader writes: "After working with what
was supposed to be one of the best endo's in the area and knowing that
Synthroid didn't work for me, research on alternative medicine led me
to Dr. Langer. A year after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's / Hypothyroidism
I feel Dr. Langer has helped me get my life back. He believes in and
prescribes Armour. He also has run other tests such as allergy and yeast
to be sure that there are not other reasons for my fatigue. He won't
stop until you feel good."
Another recommendation: "I got Dr. Langer's
name off of your website after I had pituitary surgery and
then symptoms of
dizziness, weight gain, and anxiety. All of those symptoms were keeping me
from living my full and
wonderful life. Two top endocrinologists told me 'nothing was wrong'. They
said my blood was fine.
Dr. Langer found food allergies, Hashimotos, Hyperthyroid and stayed with me
every week for the past
six months until I was myself again. Never have I met a doctor like this. His
reputation in Berkeley
with kids is also stellar. Thank you so much for the listing here and yes, it is
true what the previous
writer said; Dr. Langer will stay with you until you feel good, or great. He is the
tops. Thanks for
having this informative place. Without it, I would have been on all sorts of
drugs. Thank you." (Added Dec. 04)
Another fan of Dr. Langer: "I got
Dr. Langer’s name and number off your website. After 15 years of feeling tired and my HMO doctor
not listening to me, I saw Dr. Langer. In 2 weeks I was feeling great. It’s been 2 and a half months
and I’m a new person. He started me on Armour Thyroid and supplements and I’m losing weight,
motivated, and feeling so energized. I can’t thank him enough." (Added 10/05) Berkeley
Arlan Cohn general practitioner 510-548-1933. A reader shares, "Arlan
Cohn has made such a difference in my life. He listens and then makes
an evaluation. He has kept me on top of my thyroid for the past two
years. He has also helped me with some sleeping problems I was having."

Dr. #102, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 (310) 273-1766. "I was told I had
chronic fatigue and was a closet eater. I was told about Dr. Catz and
found out I did not have chronic fatigue but hypothyroid. I had a goiter
and tumors. Who knows what would have happened and I was referred to
Dr. Catz." (added 1/04)
Another reader writes: "I meet people all over
the place who
have had difficulty in diagnosing thyroid problems. When they talk about
who finally diagnosed and successfully treated them, Dr. Catz has been
their savior!" (Added 4/04)
Another reader writes:
"I've been trying to find out for over a year why I'm exhausted when
I wake up and was on depression medication. I thought it was just part of getting older. A friend at work
went to Dr. Catz, after getting normal thyroid test results, and found out through ultrasound that she has
an enlarged thyroid that was cutting off her air, so they thought she had sinus problems. In 2 weeks on
medication, her neck was 2 1/2 inches smaller. I found out that even though I had negative thyroid tests,
I had 6 goiters on my thyroid. I am on medication and am excited to get my life back! " (Added: Dec.
04)
Another reader writes: "I had been very ill for over a year, after the
birth of my first child. After seeing numerous doctors here in Bakersfield, I heard about Dr. Catz. He
found that I had a goiter, and an under active thyroid gland. He prescribed thyroid hormones, and I've
been well. I've been treated now by Dr. Catz for over twenty years, and I am so grateful to him. Before
I found him I thought my life was over. I actually wanted it to be because I was so ill." (Added

doctor, especially for women. He takes his time, is NEVER patronizing
or dismissive. He's a great listener and "detective", extremely supportive
and proactive in his patients' healthcare and wellbeing." (added 1/04)
Another reader recommends Dr. Trabulus: "Dr. Trabulus is a great
listener. He is thorough and doesn’t test just for thyroid, but also for possible related conditions. He
is very considerate of any symptoms I might have. I think he currently prescribes only synthetic
thyroid." (Added 10/05) Burbank

10 years. I first approached him with using Armour about 6 years ago. I thought he would shoot it down.
He
listened to me and made the changes. I moved to a different city and tried new doctors. All refused
to put me back on Armour. I decided to drive the 30 miles when I realized he was the BEST! "
(Added: June 2004)

patient's needs physically and emotionally. Very honest with a great sense of humor." (Added

A reader writes: "I went to Dr. Nagel

Nagel listened to my concerns, ran extensive tests, and decided to put me on Armour (my previous
doctors prescribed synthetics that were not working well enough). Now I feel so much better!" (Added

A reader writes: "Personal care, sympathetic, willing to listen to patient
needs and ideas... An amazing man and doctor who I would recommend to
anyone with or without thyroid problems." (Added 11/02) Del Mar (San Diego area)
A reader writes: "Dr. Monica Moore takes time to hear all my concerns
and I never feel rushed when I'm there. She actually SAT DOWN in front
of me and asked me a whole battery of questions, successfully diagnosing
my hypothyroidism with embarrassingly little help from me. She has been
very open to my suggestions and concerns about my medication and is
never defensive about my questions regarding my lab numbers. She's just
so open-minded and has really involved me in my own path to wellness.
Her office staff is the BEST, so friendly and helpful, I can't help
but smile even when I'm feeling lousy. (619)793-5000"

Practice and Hormone Replacement Therapy. Dr. Shah has written a very
informative booklet about the Benefits of Natural (Bio-Identical) Hormone
Replacement Therapy. Dr. Shah is very knowledgeable about thyroid and
other hormone related disorders and various treatments related to this
disorder. He is willing to treat my symptoms and not my lab results
only. Dr. Shah is willing to try different thyroid drugs like Levoxyl,
Cytomel time released T-3, Armour Thyroid, and Thyrolar. A visit with
Dr. Shah didn't even put a dent in my budget. He only charges a reasonable
family practice fee and my Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO insurance covered
it. Dr. Shah's treatments have been a real blessing. " (Added 2/03)
Another reader writes: "Very patient, spent one and half hours with me.
Explained everything
in detail and really cared to fix me. Examined my throat carefully and
addressed the problems I had. He has a heart of gold and I thank him.
He reassured me I will get better. Uses t-3 too." (Added 6/03) Encinitas
Shen Wang MD, Neurologist, 477 N El Camino Real #310, Encinitas,
CA 92024, 760-942-2222. A
reader writes: "After several years of attempts of having the thyroid
treated I questioned DR Wang as
to tests in normal range despite all symptoms of hypo. I was shocked
with his admitting to me quite often
tests are normal & a very broad range of normal. He has medical
records on me for 14 years & has seen
dramatic changes. With my finally questioning him over such he put me
on Armour realizing I had not
been treated for this problem & needed to be. My GP who is listed
here as a top thyroid DR ignored my
complaints stating tests were normal. Period. No discussion. I was quite
thrilled to finally have this
problem addressed properly with feeling results. I wish I had of realized
a neurologist could have diagnosed this long time ago." (Added: June 2004)

the time to listen and address the concerns of the patient. He seems to me most concerned to getting to
the root of the problem and correcting it. His office setting is very relaxing and not at all like the typical
doctor’s office. He takes all of your information during the appointment so that it will be instantly
available at the next appointment. All of my questions were answered in a simple way that showed me
that the doctor does not feel threatened by a patient asking questions. He also ordered the most detailed
set of lab work that I have ever had done. I highly recommend Dr. Linfoot to anyone who is having
problems getting answers to their medical situation." (Added 10/05) Laguna Beach, Orange County
Dr. Janet Huang Endocrinologist 3182 Coast Highway, Suite 405 Laguna
Beach, CA 92651 is 949-872-2850. A reader shares, "I was diagnosed with
Hashimoto’s in April 1999. I have seen two other endocrinologists and
they both told me to take my Synthroid and there was nothing else wrong
with me. Dr. Huang cares enough to look more deeply at the individual.
She found high testosterone levels and is currently working on this
problem, then she will start on the next symptom so that hopefully I
can feel like I used to (normal). She stays on top of all the new research
and is very well educated. I have referred a friend to her who has had
hyperthyroidism for a few years and other symptoms. Dr. Huang is treating
her and she also feels back to normal. We swear by her!!!!!" Laguna Hills
Manuel Fernandez, MD endocrinologist 949-770-4177. Writes one reader,
"Besides being my cousin, he was there for me when I was first diagnosed
with Hashimoto’s. I am on Lithium, but no one ever bothered to look
at my thyroid gland although I was having symptoms before being put
on lithium. My cousin said to me that lithium can BRING out thyroid
disease that is already there. It apparently runs in our family. Most
of my cousins, his sisters, have it. His wife tells me he is most helpful
to women going through difficult post partum times. He is a devoted
endocrinologist."
Another reader recommends Dr. Fernandez: "Until
I found Dr. Fernandez, I was so tired I couldn't get off the
couch. My hair was falling out in chunks, my sudden weight gain couldn't
be explained and my cholesterol fell into the high risk category. A
previous doctor was hesitant to run the correct tests which finally
confirmed a diagnosis of Hashimoto's. I was prescribed Synthroid, but
my symptoms weren't improving and in some cases were getting worse.
This is when a friend recommended Dr. Fernandez. He suggested we try
Armour Thyroid instead and took the time and ran the tests necessary
to get to the root of my problem. His compassion and knowledge changed
my life. Every symptom has improved dramatically for me, including a
normal cholesterol range, finally. If you feel like you aren't getting
the answers you need or the understanding you deserve, I can't recommend
Dr. Fernandez highly enough." (Added 2/03)
More praise from a reader for Dr.
Fernandez: Dr. Manual Fernandez, Endocrinology, Laguna Hills CA 94 9-770-4177.
"Previous doc said that my 3.3 levels were "just fine" and
my weight gain, fatigue, etc was just because I turned 30. Went to Dr.
Fernandez who spent over an hour with me, answering my questions and
really made me feel comfortable. I can't thank him enough!!" (1/04)

thorough, very detail oriented. He went through all of my symptoms, all of my previous lab results, and
gave me an even greater understanding of how to treat this disease. He also uncovered pre-diabetes,
which my former doctor wouldn't even test for, despite nonexistent weight loss (7x/week workouts and
restricted diet). I truly have more control of my health!" (Added 6/05)
A reader writes:
"I met Dr. Chaudhary after being diagnosed with a large nodule on my thyroid gland. He
was extremelythorough and very kind. He explained all the options and help me to proceed accordingly
with the right
plan of care. He referred me to an excellent surgeon. I had my thyroid gland removed. My surgery went
well but since then, I have been struggling a bit to get my levels to a normal value. Dr Chaudhary has

recommended that I look at Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. I went
to their web page and contacted them by e-mail. I started visiting the
doctor in December 1999. I had my last visit on April 25, 2001. He did
decompression surgery (bulging eyes) and eye lid surgery. Dr. McCann
is caring, personable, very professional, compassionate, and enthusiastic
about his work. I am amazed at how great my eyes feel and look. The
Professor of Ophthalmology (Dr. Robert Goldberg) and Dr. McCann invented
a new procedure for decompression surgery that is less invasive. Their

He believes in a holistic approach and supports healthy eating and exercise.
The added bonus is that he is also an OBGYN so he can help with the
fertility problems associated with thyroid disorders or with easing
menopause. He has an international clientele who travel to see him because
he is such a champion of women and has an excellent reputation among
other doctors. He uses natural supplements in conjunction with any medication
you may need. I went to numerous doctors all over the country and the
Mayo clinic with all of my symptoms before finding him. He has changed
my life and I will always be grateful. He is also very progressive and
is on top of the latest research concerning alternative medicine. The
final bonus is he makes a multivitamin/mineral that is awesome and you
can buy all of your supplies at his office. Do not let the Beverly Hills
location intimidate you, His is a very casual office but very thorough.
I will be moving to New York City this year but plan to keep him as

Hypothyroidism for over 10 years, but
when I experienced trouble with repeated miscarriages and my former
Endocrinologist would not even talk to me about a thyroid connection
to infertility. I started seeing Dr. Grellet she spent an hour with
me on our first meeting just getting to know me and my situation, and
finding out where I wanted to go from here. We set up an appointment
for the following week, and she did the most complete physical I have
ever had. She was the first Dr. to check for anti thyroid antibodies,
and do a complete thyroid screen (all my other Dr. did for the past
2 years was a T4). Needless to say my antibodies that should have been
below 2 were above 70. She actually LISTENS to her patients, and does
not mind at all if I ask questions, or have articles I would like her
to look over. She has been very open to my suggestions and concerns
about my medication. She is the first Dr. that has actually involved
me in my own treatment. I highly recommend her." (Added 2/03)

shook Dr. Grellet's hand and she started in on the questions about my
Hashimoto's. Turns out that she noticed my hand was as cold as ice when
she shook it and that's all she needed to consider Armour. Now I have
energy and warm hands/feet. I love everyone in Dr. Grellet's office

him to dive into the understanding how the human brain and thyroid dance
and dysfunction together. I am a 46 year old female who has had joint
pains for 20-years. Early menopause hit me at 40. At which point I went
to four different gynecologists who turned me away because I was too
young. I then turned to a local well-known endocrinologist in Goleta
Dr. D. S., who was compassionate and recognized the hormone problem,
anemia, and B12 deficiency right away. She also noted that my thyroid
gland seemed enlarged; yet felt it was fat around the gland. Dr. D.
S. stated that it appeared that my body was not repairing due to fact
that I had tendonitis and carpal tunnel in both hands and arms, yet
did not have an answer for this problem. I was diagnosed with low thyroid
(YES even though my numbers are well into the normal range and he requested
I purchase the book THYROID POWER) and he immediately put me on ARMOUR
thyroid. On the 4th-day I woke up a new person approximately 3-minutes
prior to the alarm rather than hitting the snooze for 10-12 slaps. Additionally
the pain in my joints went down about 25%. By the 7th-day, the first
day on a full dose, I had amorous thoughts about my husband and it had
been years since I had an actual sex drive. Additionally the pain in
my body was down by about 50% and I was now sleeping like a rock. For
23-years I have blamed my husbands snoring for my not sleeping; now
I cannot tell you if he snores. By the 14th-day my entire body was pain
free. I do not appear to have any signs of the tendonitis or carpal
tunnel, my hips and back do not hurt, I was told I had Fibromyalgia
and Ankylosing Spondylitis, Osteoporosis in my neck and I now have NO
PAIN WHAT SO EVER ANYWHERE. So in the last two weeks I have made appointments

Palm Desert, CA, 760-772-8883."My
daughter-in-law found this doctor on this web-site in Palm Springs.
That was February 15, 2002. From August 25, 2001 until 8 days ago, I've
suffered from hypothyroidism and the treatment with 2 mgs of Synthroid
- prescribed (with little attention to a complete physical, etc.,) by
doctors in Laughlin, NV. Nothing was working! I was extremely fatigued;
my hair kept thinning - I had rapid pulse; couldn't sleep - and felt
I'd be dead by the end of the year if something didn't change. When
I arrived at my son's house on February 14 in Palm Desert, I was sick
- collapsed, and thanks to Sandy being so determined to find a doctor
on the inter-net, I'm feeling like a brand new person today. She found
the doctor and he took me in on March 4, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. Unfortunately
I was very ill with a severe bronchial infection, but he handled the
illness; prescribed medicine for my anxiety, and told me I'd been overdosed
all these months by way too high of a dosage of Synthroid. He made me
wait 10 days without taking any type of thyroid replacement - so I could
eliminate the Synthroid and also recover from the illness. Then on March
11 he started me natural thyroid replacement program. Today is March
15 and I've just finished walking 1.5 miles at a brisk pace with little
fatigue. I've hung out one load of clothes; fixed breakfast (now that
I have an appetite again), and have had a sound night's sleep since
he gave me the proper medication to assist me in this. I urge anyone
who's suffering like I have to call this doctor and if he's not available
to add you as his patient, please read what I'm taking (the 2 grains
of Armour Thyroid) and go straight to an accredited doctor with a print-out
of not only this testimonial, but the one on page 5 of 10 pages on this
site - written by another individual who said, "He put me on 2 grains
of Armour Thyroid and in just a month my life has been given back to
me." It was her testimonial that caused me to pick him on the 15th of
February. So I felt it necessary to add mine so we can continue to help
others who've been so ill."

"For 5 years I struggled with my health, even reaching the point whereI could hardly get out of bed.
I went from doctor to doctor, many of them highly recommended butnothing they did made a difference. They put me on Synthroid, Westhroid, and Armour Thyroid, and was even treated for Wilson's Syndrome and nothing worked. Then I went to Dr. Neil Rouzier and almost overnight my health turned around. Neil Rouzier works with compounding pharmacies and he prescribed a compounded thyroid medicine. What a difference! I finally,
after 5 years, am getting my lifeback. Almost all of my symptoms, except the excess weight, have
disappeared. I highly recommend him, especially to someone who has tried all the other thyroid medications

I don't know if you're only looking for "top docs" who are specialists

Another reader recommends Dr. Becker: "I never felt better than during the 20 years

I moved out of state and now have to find another Dr. in Arizona. I

Dr. Quan-Yang Duh, Endocrine surgeon, UCSF Medical Center, 400
Parnassus
- 6th floor San Francisco, CA 94115 415-353-2161 Dr. Duh was recommended,
following a 3rd opinion that I was getting from UCSF. Coming from a
small community in the foothills of the Mother Lode of California, I
felt it was necessary to get a number of opinions about the thyroid
nodule that I had. The UCSF staff seemed thorough and complete in their
review of my case. At this point they suggested Dr. Duh as the best
fit for my personality (more than a little anxious, very well prepared
with lots of questions, and demanding of the best care possible). On
the off chance I might get an appointment the same day (this seemed
very unlikely) we went to the Department of Surgery and were told we
could be seen if we were willing to wait. The first thing that convinced
me that Dr. Duh cared for patients was the fact that the staff said
they had been directed to find time for patients who had traveled long
distances to get a consult. Dr. Duh spent 30 minutes answering all of
our questions and set up a surgery date (he had to work a bit to make
it happen as quickly as we wished). He then said that anytime I had
a question to be sure and call and he would try to answer it. On the
pre-op visit I had a question no one could answer, so Dr. Duh was paged
and spoke with me for about 10 minutes on the phone until I was satisfied.
I was most impressed with how he completely and carefully listed to
my concerns and questions. He then gave careful, thoughtful and sensitive
answers, even though I suspect he has heard the same questions countless
times before. Following my surgery, he even made a special trip by my
room to speak with my wife because there had been a problem with seeing
her earlier. He was very encouraging, knowledgeable, and most importantly,
took my need for information and support very seriously. The surgery
seemed to go flawlessly and my recovery was very rapid. Besides being
Department Chair, Dr. Duh has published at least three books, as well
as numerous (70+) articles and assorted other written works. I hope
this information will help anyone out there who is trying to find a
well-qualified and caring surgeon.
Another supporter for Dr. Duh He is known internationally and is in surgery 4 days
a week!! He's done
extensive research written papers and is on the cutting edge of technology.
I live in Reno Nevada and he calls me on the phone!!! Unbelievable man.
He's one in a million. Instead of opting to remove my thyroid which
is always an easy fix with a nodule we are watching it. Much rather
do that than let someone remove it!! I used to employ two-way radio
technicians there were those that would remove the whole board and replace
it and the ones that knew what they were doing would only remove what
was necessary!! Contact him, he is the best period.
More praise from a reader for Dr. Duh: "Dr. Duh performed surgery on me in 1996
and removed a large multi nodular
goiter from my chest without having to crack the sternum. He is gifted,
kind, and listens to all your concerns. Recently, I had some suspicious
lymph nodes show up in my neck and I faxed the ultra sound report to
his office. He called me that night to talk about the report! I now
live 500 miles away but if I need surgery again, I will go to him. He
is completely open and has no "stuff" about how one looks, or sexual
orientation or anything; he just loves what he does and wants to help."

Another reader recommends Dr. Duh: "My mom was diagnosed with a goiter. It was
growing down into her chest cavity, which was resulting in a shortness of breath. I found this website

My parents are uninsured, but this was no problem. Dr. Duh was kind, professional, and really knows

though it is to your advantage to keep your appt, he also comes after
you to make sure you keep scheduled time. He is really good and the
Hospital he works out of is even better (California Pacific Hospital
in San Francisco, CA."
Another reader recommends Dr. Kimmerling: I agree...Dr. Kimmerling was the only
doctor to discover my probably
lifelong thyroid problem. Even my physician who is a Harvard Graduate
didn't discover it (but he's not a Thyroid specialist). Dr. Kimmerling
FOUND the reason why I wasn't losing weight, feeling lethargic and even
though my TSH level wasn't 10, it was slight enough to make my symptoms
real and cause problems. So I feel like I actually have a new lease

be supportive. (Added 2/03)

27625 Jefferson Ave Suite 101, Temecula CA 92590, (951) 676-3748. A reader writes: "Dr. Mitzner
understands that clinical symptoms along with a low body temperature are the two most reliable indicators
of hypothyroidism
and uses Armour's Thyroid extensively. He also identifies and treats
those with Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome with slow release T3 and has many
success with this therapy. He specializes in bioidentical hormone
replacement for andropausal and menopausal women who frequently have
multiple hormone deficiencies including testosterone, progesterone, human
growth hormone, etc.". (Added June 2005) Torrance

CA 90505 phone: 310-541-7115 or 310-375-2705, http://www.hormoneandlongevitycenter.com.
email:drholty@usa.net Areas of practice: specializes in thyroid optimization
with T4/T3 and straight T3 preparations. Started the Thyroid Optimization
Clinic. Patients fly in from all over the United States for thyroid
treatment. Treats all types of hypothyroidism, including standard (primary),
secondary (pituitary dysfunction), tertiary (hypothalamic), which result
in normal or low TSH with sub-optimal T4 and T3 levels, low T3 syndromes,
poor conversion of T4 to T3, high reverse T3 (Wilson's syndrome), thyroid
receptor resistance syndromes, which results in hypothyroidism with
normal thyroid blood levels, difficult thyroid cases, chronic fatigue,
fibromyalgia. Also treats all other hormonal deficiencies including
adrenal, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, HGH, and is expert at
prescribing natural pharmaceutical compounded medications."
Another reader recommends Dr. Holtorf: "Dr. Holtorf was able to improve my thyroid
condition even though I
had already been treated for this condition for 20+ years. Dr. Holtorf
was able to treat my under treated thyroid problem and I have never
felt better. He is familiar with how my hormones interact with one another
and was able to tell more about me medically than anyone else has. If
I experience a problem that he is not familiar with, he actually conducts
research and gets back to me with alternate ways to treat me. This man
is a blessing, and I highly recommend him to anyone in the area or willing
to fly to see him. I did - I live on the east coast but I flew in just
to see him based upon other recommendations - it was totally worth it.
I am now feeling like I haven't felt since before my pregnancies in
the 1970's!" (added 1/04)
Another reader writes:
"Dr.
Holtorf looks beyond the typical thyroid bloodwork. He focuses on your
symptoms and looks for other causes that can contribute to thyroid problems.
Dr. Holtorf's treatment has made a huge difference in the way I feel.
He does not accept insurance but every penny I have paid to this doctor
is worth it. I have so much more energy and even though I'm still on
the road to recovery, for the first time in many years I feel very confident
that I will be there soon." (Added: June 2004) Torrance
Dr. Cindy Williams, Endocrinologist, South Bay Endocrine Assoc., 20911
Earl Street, Suite 460 Torrance, CA 90503 (310) 542-6333. I have only
been to see Dr. Williams three times, but I feel great every time I
leave her office. She validates my feelings with her sympathetic ear
and spends extra time with me if I have questions. She takes my symptoms
seriously and explains why my body is doing certain things. She is also
open to suggestions and treats me like an intelligent human being. I
cannot speak highly enough of her.
Another reader writes: "I see that someone has already listed this "TOP of the TOP
DOCS", however,
I think she should be listed twice! She is everything the first person
who listed her has said and more! She is extremely intelligent, perceptive,
informed, curious, receptive, interested and has the unique ability
to be herself as she practices this art which she clearly loves. I have
searched for over 20 years for a physician such as she, and am glad
to be hypothyroid!"
Another fan: "Dr. Williams is remarkable. She LISTENS & she sympathizes. She's
not just a
"numbers" doctor; she takes the patient's symptom profile into account. I had seen an associate of another
physician listed on this board and was very disappointed; Dr. Williams cleared up my confusion.
PLEASE be sure to check w/your state's medical board to see if the doctor you're considering is Board
Certified, and if so, in what. It's NOT essential, but it helps to know. Also, for most of us, insurance
IS a concern; if your physician won't accept your insurance, it may be because they won't cover the
services. These are important considerations IMO. Also, there are a # of "alternative" treatments in
general medicine today; it's worth it to research the efficacy & safety of these options before paying for
them. " (Added: Dec. 04) Torrance

"At 30, I had suffered from Hypothyroidism for 20 years. My test results were
uncontrollable, I was told I was my specialists worst patient, and after taking 300mcg of thyroxin a day
with no result, I found Dr. Cho. I have been completely OFF thyroid meds for one year, have lost weight
(a first) and no longer test positive for Hashimoto's (my anti-thyroid peroxidase levels were over 800).
Dr. Cho is kind, generous, and most important listens. She customizes a plan for each patient, and every
time I leave her office I feel better and better. At the beginning of my treatment, she assured my that the
body had the ability to heal itself, and I believe she has proven that true. Her unique treatment of me ,
as well as several family members and friends makes her my top choice in the treatment of any illness."

A reader writes: "Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy has a very large practice comprising of
medical doctors and
nurse practitioners, technicians and a nutritionist. Her practice is incredible. They treat patients every day
with minor to very serious illnesses and take a traditional and whole body approach to illness. The staff
is great and they will move mountains to make sure a patient is informed and well treated. They have alot
of expertise in thyroid and use Armour thyroid, a natural thyroid to balance the body. Dr. Connealy and

Another fan: "I highly recommend Dr. Dreilbelbis. He was so thorough and took the
time to explain how the thyroid works. I learned alot from him and I can't wait to start my new life
feeling back to normal again. I've been hypothyroid for 3 years now and he understands because he is

people on these thyroid sites say fantastic things about it." (Added: Dec. 04) Tustin

Martha Gonzalez, Endocrinology/Women's Health Martha Gonzalez, M.D.,
MPH 116 North Brent Street, Ventura, CA 93003 805-656-4311 A reader
writes: "She is well versed in reading between the lines when tests
results are one thing and how you feel is another. She also took time
to do reflex testing as well as asking many questions."
Another reader writes: She is awesome. I have had a thyroid problem for 20 years
now. All the
other doctors I've been to have said it's enlarged but working normally.
My first visit to Dr. Gonzales, she put me on the meds I needed immediately
and less than a week later, I feel like a new person. She recognized
all my symptoms immediately and showed genuine concern."
Another reader recommends Dr. Gonzalez: "Dr. Martha Gonzalez is a top doc because
she cares. She is truly in
the business of healing peoples ills. She wants to help you feel better
in the best way for you. Using a treatment you will feel comfortable
with. Two and one half years I have been looking for answers to my symptoms.
I don't even want to begin to tell you the frustration and self-doubt
I have been through with many physicians and specialist. Dr. Gonzalez
took one look at a test done in September of 2001 and knew I had Hashimoto's
Disease. She put me on meds immediately. She takes the time to answer
any questions you may have. She explains herself, the disease, the treatment
in detail because she wants you to be informed. I feel I can trust her
judgment and if I have questions she will talk to you about my doubts.
At last, a health professional I can trust to listen to me and give
me meds that I need. If I got one more box of Viox I was going to have
a real anxiety attack." (Added 2/03)
A reader writes: "I had a thyroidectomy in 1992, since then I have had a lot of doctors
(changing medical groups, moving, etc.). There have only been two thyroid doctors worth their weight
in gold. Dr. Martha Gonzalez in Ventura and Dr. Boris Catz in Beverly Hills. Dr. Gonzales is my
current doctor. I have what I would call a resistance to synthroid. Only Armour thyroid in large doses
works on me. I have had MDs all over switch me back and forth to synthroid, even when I begged them
not to. Sure enough, I would go into a deep depression and feel horrible from head to toe. Dr. Gonzales
listened to me. Now I feel great again. There can never be enough said about a doctor who listens and
is willing to try and make you feel better - even if that is not what the "norm" would agree to." (Added:
Dec. 04)
Another reader recommends Dr. Gonzalez:
"Not only is Dr. Gonzalez a great listener and warm and caring, but she really knows her stuff! Unlike
a lot of endocrinologists, she only does thyroid disease and hormone replacement for women. Dr.
Gonzalez has advanced training in nutrition and public health and likes to put her patients on vitamins.
The ones she prescribed for me really help me. She likes synthroid, but is willing to prescribe other
medications including natural thyroxine for those who want it." (Added 10/05)
Another
recommendation: "Dr. Gonzales is simply the best. I had suspected I had hypothyroidism
for years, but all the doctors I went to stated that I didn't. I saw Dr. Gonzales and she took the time to
talk with me about my symptoms
and did extensive lab work. Turns out I was hypothyroid after all. I have seen her for 5 years. I moved
about 2 hours away from her location a few years ago, but I still travel to Ventura to see her. I am
currently pregnant, and she is the ONLY person I would trust with regulating my meds during my
pregnancy. She is warm and kind and I always feel supported and listened to. She is simply the best."

"Dr. Susser is very experienced with various hormonal deficiencies,
listens to what you say is feeling wrong, your ideas about how one might
fix whatever it is, and then works with you to treat whatever it is.
He does the whole battery of testing, but is not tied to the numbers
- your dosage depends on how you feel. He uses Westhroid instead of
Armour (unless you want Armour), as he said it is more uniform, in his
experience, and T3 and T4 if you need those.. He is very experienced
with chelation therapy (I first went to him for very high aluminum and
mercury levels) - his is a study site, and has his own line of supplements.
I was able to get my thyroid medication right at the office."
Another reader writes: Dr. Susser will LISTEN to you, and therefore is happy to run
any lab
work you ask for. He treats his patients with Westhroid (natural thyroid),
but also will adjust with combination therapy as needed. In addition,
he allows you to adjust your dosage yourself, based on your symptoms,
rather than using lab work. He is very open-minded! Yreka

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
