ABOUT THE THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY

The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care.

Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment.

Please let us know if you have feedback about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your doctor.

Anchorage

Dr. Robert J. Rowen Complementary Medicine (907) 344-7775 615 E. 82nd Ave. Ste. 300 Anchorage, AK 99518 A reader writes, “He goes to the root of the problem and doesn’t just give you something to cover up the symptoms.”

Anchorage

Dr. John Mues, Internal Medicine, Office phone 907-561-4362. A reader writes: "I have been going to Dr Mues for over 10 years...he is a very caring doctor, he listens and answers any questions I have had...he is very knowledgeable of thyroid symptoms and treatment....wonderful doctor who is an excellent and has a sense of humor to boot."

Anchorage

I want to recommend my GP. Dr. Mattison White in Anchorage. He diagnosed me originally during a routine physical and probably saved my life. "What is that lump on your neck?" I said "What lump?" I couldn't see it and didn't even know I had it myself. Later since I had a lobectomy and wanted to hold off on the complete thyroidectomy and monitor it instead. He is helping me with this. I have blood tests and RAI imaging. I gradually went on Synthroid (actually about 12 months after my surgery) and am taking .2 now which gives me a negligible TSH. I think this will make my remaining thyroid atrophy. Dr. White has excellent communication manner. You can go in a talk to him about everything. I highly recommend him (in lieu of an endo).

Eagle River

Anne Carter, ANP Women's Hormone Replacement, 11421 Old Glenn Hwy #103, AK, 99577 (907) 696-5680, www.auroraclinic.com. A reader shares: “Anne was fantastic with my condition(s)! I went in for my yearly exams, and she asked all the right questions and realized I had more going on than any other doctor was willing to investigate. After several tests that she recommended, we discovered that not only was my thyroid not responding to Synthroid (though my TSH was still in normal ranges), but that my adrenal glands were underactive as well as my ovaries were becoming cystic. She saved my quality of life by working with me diligently to find what levels and types of hormones would work for me. She is very open minded and recommended Armour. Overall fantastic care.” (Added 6/05)

Another reader writes:
“I had been suffering from a lot of stress over the last few years and slowly my body started to go down hill. One day I met with Nurse Practitioner Ann and immediately she knew that I was suffering from adrenal fatigue. Because I had been having irregular bleeding she did some blood work and found that I had hypothyroidism, She prescribed amour and within about two weeks time I am feeling more energy and I have lost six pounds. Ann does listen and she cares a lot about how you feel. I highly recommend her services! You won't be disappointed.” (Added 1/06)

Eagle River

Dr. Daniel Young, Naturopath, Naturopathy, U of A Campus 10928 Eagle River Road Ste. 254, Eagle River, Alaska, 907-694-5522. A reader writes: “For years, I struggled with issues and the MD's had me on Tenormin, carrying around nitrous and on muscle relaxers. I went in to see Dr. Young and within a week had me diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Food allergies/sensitivities and in 3 months of being on his *diet*, I cleaned up. Problem is, in Alaska, Naturopaths are not allowed to write prescriptions (we are still in the stone age), so I am on a natural thyroid which doesn't work as well as the Armour. At any rate, he is GOOD at what he does, and works with the WHOLE self, not just the physical body. Plus, he has a GREAT sense of humor.” (Added 1/06)

Eielson Air Force Base

A reader recommends: "Dr. Anthony Stone at Eielson Air Force Base Medical Clinic. Unfortunately he is only available to military or retired (like me) people. But he has worked very closely with me and has been willing to try things."

Juneau

Kristin Cox, colon hydrotherapy, endocrinology, 326 4th St. #202, Juneau, AK 99801, 907-523-2102, drkristin@gci.net, A reader writes: "I, the doctor, treat a lot of subclinical hypothyroidism. The colonics machine brings a lot of constipated people into the office. I screen them all for hypothyroidism. I don't rule out hypothyroidism until a trial of thyroid replacement has made no improvement in their health." (Added Apr 06)

Fairbanks

Dr. David Odom, Anti-Aging & Hormone Replacement Specialist, Ph.907-457-07546 1531 20th. St., Fairbanks, AK. 907-457-SLIM Dr. Odom's wife wrote to recommend him: "Dr. Odom, my husband, actually looks at the patient, not just the tests. He uses all natural hormones including Armour Thyroid. He's helped me with low thyroid, as well as others I know with depression, infertility, and fibromyalgia."

A patient writes:
Dr. Odom has changed my life!!! I suffered from a variety of classic symptoms of being hypothyroid. It is hard for me to explain how bad I felt but I lived with daily pain, nausea, I was so cold I thought I would freeze to death, I was very light sensitive, tired, depressed, I had sinus problems, irregular menstrual cycles that were very painful, high cholesterol and blood pressure, my hair was falling out, my hair and skin were so dry that it was painful. And to make things worse my 4 feet 11 inch body was supporting 199 pounds. I had gone from a size 5 to a 22. And I had lost 3 babies due to miscarriage. You get the idea. The physicians I had seen treated the symptoms but not the problem. They felt that my thyroid was "normal" my TSH was 4.85. Since I have seen Dr. Odom everything has changed. I feel great!!! I don't have the pain anymore; I’m not cold or nauseous. My cholesterol has gone from 259 to 159. I lost 77 pounds. I got back into my size 5s. Then I got pregnant after 6 years of trying. I had a healthy baby he is 1 today. I feel blessed to have found Dr, Odom. He has given me back my life. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He is a great doctor."

Seattle, Washington

A reader writes: "I saw your request for top docs in the Anchorage area and am sorry to report that I don't think there is enough thyroid cancer cases in Alaska for much help from specialists. So i have no one to recommend for endos or oncologists. The ENT's up here all subscribe to the "cut it out then burn it" philosophy. So I had my surgery done in Seattle. Excellent surgeon Dr. Stephen Clark. So I want to recommend my GP. I highly recommend him (in lieu of an endo)."

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.

1. The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
2. The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
3. The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
4. Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.

Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.
